Cancun remains one of the safest international destinations on the map, especially if you are staying inside the highly patrolled corridors of the Hotel Zone or the exclusive enclaves in Costa Mujeres. But what happens when you want to leave the protective bubble of your resort at night? To get the ground-truth reality, we spoke directly with locals who have lived and worked in the Cancun hospitality industry for years. The consensus is clear: Cancun is not the lawless spring break destination it was a decade ago. Local police are stricter than ever when it comes to badly behaving tourists. If you plan on leaving your property after dark, here are five non-negotiable rules you need to follow.
1. Stop Drinking In Public

It is completely acceptable to drink a margarita on the beach in front of your resort during the day. However, do not confuse resort rules with city laws. It is strictly illegal to drink alcohol in public spaces, including sidewalks and streets, anywhere in Mexico. If you leave a bar or a club in the Hotel Zone, leave your drink inside. Walking down the boulevard with an open container gives patrolling police an immediate, legal reason to stop you. It is an unforced error that results in heavy administrative fines and instantly ruins your night.
2. Leave The Vape At The Hotel

Mexico currently enforces some of the absolute strictest anti-tobacco laws on the planet. Smoking and vaping are federally banned in all public spaces. This broad ban includes sidewalks, public plazas, and beaches. Walking out of a nightclub and lighting a cigarette or hitting a vape on the street is a surefire way to get stopped by police roaming the Hotel Zone or downtown areas at night. The fines are incredibly steep, and officers will confiscate your device on the spot. Keep it in your room until you are back in a designated smoking area.
3. Avoid Public Intoxication

A veteran bartender working at a high-end property in Punta Cancun confirmed this is the absolute number one reason tourists get arrested. The days of stumbling blindly down Kukulcán Boulevard at 3:00 AM are over. Police actively detain tourists who cannot handle their alcohol. They do this to maintain public order and to ensure your physical safety. A heavily intoxicated tourist walking alone is a highly visible target for opportunistic petty theft. If you have had too many drinks, just stay at your resort. If you are visibly drunk on the street, you will likely spend the night in the Cancun “drunk tank” (El Torito) to sober up. It comes with massive fines and a night you do not want to remember.
4. The Door-to-Door Rule: Do Not Walk

If you are going out at night, make it a strict rule to not walk between venues or back to your hotel. Always take a verified taxi or an Uber door-to-door. Many tourists assume a quick five-block walk in the Hotel Zone is harmless. However, walking late at night—especially after drinking—drastically increases your chances of encountering street-level criminals or being stopped for a police welfare check. Have the restaurant call a taxi, or order an Uber directly to the lobby entrance. Eliminate the risk entirely by staying off the pavement.
5. Zero Tolerance For Disorderly Conduct

Behavior that might just get you kicked out of a local bar in your hometown will get you quickly arrested in Mexico. Local authorities have zero tolerance for disorderly conduct. This includes fighting, arguing with bouncers, public urination, or falling down in the street. Many tourists are caught off guard to find out that Mexico is actually much stricter regarding public disturbances. An argument outside a club will rapidly escalate into an arrest, a night in a holding cell, and heavy fines.
Are Cancun, Playa Del Carmen & Tulum Safe?
The Traveler Safety Index tracks the real-time security of tourists who have recently visited the Mexican Caribbean.
Cancun currently holds a highly secure rating of 92% based on 1,601 recent votes. The primary issues reported are manageable and non-violent, consisting of 26 reports of local scams and 21 reports regarding transportation disputes.
Playa del Carmen also maintains a 92% safety rating with 457 recent votes, but the risks shift significantly after dark. The dense nightlife scene along 5th Avenue generates more serious incidents, specifically 8 reports of drink drugging and 7 reports of assault directly linked to bar altercations.
Tulum sits lower with a 79% safety rating from 244 recent votes. As the newest destination of the three, it is still finding the right balance of security enforcement for its young, heavy party crowd, which has led to 9 reports of assault, 6 reports of drugging, and 6 reports of theft.
The Bottom Line For Going Out At Night
Cancun is a world-class destination designed for you to have an incredible time. The local authorities are simply maintaining a secure environment for millions of international visitors. By utilizing point-to-point transportation, leaving the disruptive behavior at home, and respecting local consumption laws, you can safely experience everything the nightlife has to offer without ever crossing paths with local law enforcement or opportunistic criminals.
