Cancun is heading into a record-breaking travel season, with over 150,000 visitors expected to set foot in the tropical destination weekly.
A new report by Mexico’s Secretariat for Tourism (Sectur) reveals that the sun-soaked destination is currently seeing one of the highest occupancy rates nationwide, with nearly 73% of all hotel rooms sold out.
With the peak of the summer season just around the corner, here are 5 reasons why travelers are flocking to Cancun in record numbers this summer.
World-Class Beaches
Cancun’s numerous white-sand beaches have always been a major draw for millions of sun-seeking visitors. And this, the city’s beaches are in excellent condition for swimmers thanks to improved efforts by officials to tackle cleanliness and sargassum.
Cancun is home to the highest number of Blue-Flag beaches in Mexico, a testament to the city’s efforts to preserve the city’s unique ecology, all while allowing travelers the chance to experience some of the world’s top beaches.
Improved Aerial Connectivity
Cancun has grown to become one of the world’s most sought-after beach and sun destinations in recent years, as evidenced by new travel rankings. And with travel numbers set to climb further this year, Cancun is seeing a massive boost in new flights, especially from the United States and Canada.

With skyrocketing demand, airlines are rushing to increase capacity, with some deploying larger aircraft, and others launching new routes to meet travelers’ demand.
There are currently around 40 direct flights to Cancun from the United States, with nonstop connections from all major hubs, including Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and Atlanta. Dallas-Fort Worth boasts the title of having the busiest Cancun flights, with nearly a million passengers flying that route.
Safe And Reliable Destination
Despite its immense cultural and natural beauty, Mexico doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to travel safety. But unlike other destinations in the country, Cancun is a safe haven for tourists, with thousands of police officers and even armed troops looking out for travelers’ safety.
Ongoing efforts to enhance security have paid off, and over 20 million people visit the Mexican Caribbean safely each year. And while petty crimes, including scams, are commonplace, violent crime is exceedingly rare, mostly affecting travelers that venture outside of the safety of Cancun’s touristy areas.
Authorities are constantly monitoring safety-related concerns, and deploy hundreds of additional reinforcements during busy travel times – such as the summer holidays – to further boost safety.
A Booming Cultural Destination
Although Cancun is most famous for its array of white-sand beaches and an unparalleled choice of luxury all-inclusive, it’s also increasingly famous as a cultural and historical hub.
Museums, markets, and ruins are just a few of the cultural treasures that travelers can enjoy during their Cancun trip. And with a growing number of travelers seeking authentic experiences, Cancun offers plenty of insight into the local way of life.

From Costa Mujeres’ Mayan ruins that combine history with stunning ocean views to the azure cenotes in Puerto Morelos, Cancun is never too far from amazing sights.
Even more remote destinations, like Tulum or Holbox, are easily reachable by public transport or private transfers.
