1. Public Intoxication (Even Just Walking Home) 🚶‍♂️

Cancun is famous for its nightlife and all-inclusive drinks, but there’s a firm line between having fun at a bar and being visibly intoxicated in public. While it’s tempting to stumble back to your resort after a late night out, numerous travelers have reported being stopped by police while walking in the Hotel Zone late at night. These stops are often framed as a welfare check by officers, but a conversation that starts with “Are you okay?” can quickly turn into a more complicated situation if you are having trouble walking or speaking.

The Savvy Tip: If you’ve had a big night out, always take a taxi or Uber back to your resort, even if it’s just a short distance. It’s the safest and smartest move.

2. Vaping in Public 💨

This is one of the biggest surprises for many visitors. While vaping is common in many parts of the world, Mexico has one of the strictest anti-vaping laws on the books. It is completely illegal to vape or use e-cigarettes in any public space, including beaches, parks, and on the street.

4. Possessing Marijuana 🌿

With recreational marijuana now legal in Canada and many U.S. states, it can be easy to forget that the laws do not travel with you. In Mexico, the possession and use of recreational marijuana remain illegal. Federal law has a very low personal possession limit (5 grams), and anything over that can be treated as a serious offense. “But it’s legal where I’m from” is not a valid defense and will not prevent you from getting into serious trouble.
