Cancun’s Hotel Zone is one of the safest and most well-policed tourist destinations in the world. The constant presence of municipal, state, and even National Guard officers is there for one primary reason: to ensure the safety and security of the millions of visitors who flock to its shores every year.
But while it’s an incredibly secure and welcoming place, it’s important to remember you are in a different country with its own set of laws—and some of them can be quite surprising to first-time visitors.

Here at The Cancun Sun, we’re not here to scare you. We’re here to make you a savvy traveler. Based on recent traveler reports, here are five surprising and easily avoidable mistakes that could lead to an unwanted interaction with the police on your next Cancun trip.
1. Public Intoxication (Even Just Walking Home) 🚶♂️

Cancun is famous for its nightlife and all-inclusive drinks, but there’s a firm line between having fun at a bar and being visibly intoxicated in public. While it’s tempting to stumble back to your resort after a late night out, numerous travelers have reported being stopped by police while walking in the Hotel Zone late at night. These stops are often framed as a welfare check by officers, but a conversation that starts with “Are you okay?” can quickly turn into a more complicated situation if you are having trouble walking or speaking.
The Savvy Tip: If you’ve had a big night out, always take a taxi or Uber back to your resort, even if it’s just a short distance. It’s the safest and smartest move.
2. Vaping in Public 💨

This is one of the biggest surprises for many visitors. While vaping is common in many parts of the world, Mexico has one of the strictest anti-vaping laws on the books. It is completely illegal to vape or use e-cigarettes in any public space, including beaches, parks, and on the street.
Travelers frequently report being stopped by police for vaping publicly. The consequences can range from a stern warning to having your expensive vape device confiscated on the spot, along with a potential fine. It is simply not worth the risk.
3. Minor Traffic Violations 🚗

Renting a car in Cancun offers incredible freedom, but it also puts you under a microscope. Tourists in rental cars are often monitored more closely for traffic infractions. Things that might go unnoticed back home—like a “rolling stop” at a stop sign, not using your turn signal for a lane change, or a slight drift over the speed limit—are common reasons for being pulled over in Cancun. The best way to avoid any issues is to drive with an extra level of caution. Obey every single traffic law to the letter, and you’ll drastically reduce your chances of being stopped.
4. Possessing Marijuana 🌿

This is a critical point of confusion for many North American travelers. With recreational marijuana now legal in Canada and many U.S. states, it can be easy to forget that the laws do not travel with you. In Mexico, the possession and use of recreational marijuana remain illegal. Federal law has a very low personal possession limit (5 grams), and anything over that can be treated as a serious offense. “But it’s legal where I’m from” is not a valid defense and will not prevent you from getting into serious trouble.
5. Flying a Drone Illegally 🚁

Getting that perfect, sweeping aerial shot of the turquoise Caribbean is a tempting goal for any content creator. But flying a drone in Cancun comes with a very strict set of federal rules that many travelers are completely unaware of. It is strictly illegal to fly a drone over crowded public areas (like a busy beach), over archaeological sites like the Tulum ruins, or anywhere near the airport. Getting caught can lead to the immediate confiscation of your expensive drone and the issuance of a hefty fine. Unless you are a certified professional with the proper local permits, it’s best to keep the drone on the ground.
