Wrapping up a perfect vacation in the Mexican Caribbean should be relaxing, but the departure process at Cancun International Airport (CUN) can quickly become a stressful hurdle if you aren’t prepared.
As one of the busiest international hubs in the world, processing upwards of two million passengers every single month, navigating your exit requires a bit of strategy. To ensure your trip ends on a high note and you make it to your gate without breaking a sweat, here are five critical mistakes you need to avoid when heading home.
1. Cutting Your Arrival Time Too Close

We have all heard the standard airline suggestion to arrive “two to three hours” before an international flight. In Cancun, that three-hour window is not just a gentle suggestion—it is the hard truth.
Because of the sheer volume of travelers funneling through the terminals, check-in desks and security checkpoints can develop long, winding lines that move slowly during peak afternoon departure banks. Furthermore, you have to account for the physical drive to the airport. If you are staying in the heart of the Cancun Hotel Zone, you must give yourself a minimum of 45 minutes for the drive alone. Traffic on Boulevard Kukulcan can bottleneck unexpectedly, and you do not want to be watching the clock panic from the backseat of a taxi.
2. Ignoring The VISITAX QR Code

Quintana Roo requires all international tourists to pay a state tourism tax known as VisiTax. While enforcement at the airport has fluctuated in the past, airport officials are currently conducting random spot checks in the departure terminals before passengers proceed to security.
Actionable Intel: Do not wait until you are standing in line to deal with this. Go online and pay the VisiTax before you even leave your resort. You will receive a QR code on your phone that serves as your proof of payment. If you are stopped and haven’t paid, you will be forced to step out of line and complete the payment on the spot, risking a delay in getting to your gate.
3. Packing Pharmacy Meds Without A Prescription

It is no secret that Mexican pharmacies are incredibly popular with American tourists looking to stock up on affordable medications. However, throwing restricted pharmaceuticals into your checked bag or carry-on without a valid prescription is a massive mistake.
Once you land in the United States, you are subject to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) inspections. If you are caught bringing back regulated medications—even ones that were sold over-the-counter in Mexico—without a valid U.S. prescription, you face severe consequences. CBP can seize your medications, issue heavy financial fines, or in severe cases, pursue criminal charges.
4. Showing Up At The Wrong Terminal

Cancun International Airport is massive, consisting of four separate terminals. Unlike some regional airports where you can simply walk to the next building if you make a mistake, Cancun’s terminals are spread out.
If your taxi drops you off at Terminal 3 and your flight actually departs from Terminal 4, you cannot easily walk there. You will have to wait for the free inter-terminal shuttle bus, which can eat up 20 to 30 minutes of your precious pre-flight time. Always check your airline app or boarding pass to confirm your exact terminal before you get into your airport transfer.
5. Panicking Over A Missing Exit Stamp

If you are a standard tourist flying home, do not panic when airport authorities wave you through without stamping your passport. Mexico now utilizes automatic digital departures through airline tracking and electronic FMM records. You no longer need to hand over a paper tourist card or receive a physical exit stamp to prove you left the country legally.
The Resident Exception: There is one major caveat to this rule. If you hold a Temporary or Permanent Resident card for Mexico, you must get a physical exit stamp in your passport. Before going through security, you have to visit the INM (immigration) counter and get your passport stamped. Leaving the country without this stamp automatically cancels your residency status.
