You’ve done it. After all the planning and packing, you’ve finally stepped off the plane and into the warm, tropical air of Cancun. Your vacation has officially begun. But the next 60 minutes—the journey from the gate to your hotel shuttle—can be the most stressful and costly part of your entire trip if you’re not prepared.

The Cancun International Airport is a busy, chaotic, and often confusing place for first-time visitors. Here at The Cancun Sun, we believe a smooth arrival sets the tone for a perfect vacation. Based on the most current 2025 traveler reports, here are the five costly mistakes to avoid the moment you land.
1. Stopping for Anyone in the “Shark Tank”

After you clear immigration and customs, you will be funneled into a long corridor filled with friendly people in official-looking uniforms standing near counters and kiosks. This is the infamous “shark tank.” These are not official tourist information or transportation providers; they are almost universally high-pressure timeshare salespeople. In 2025, they are more sophisticated than ever, using iPads with hotel logos and claiming to be there to confirm your shuttle.
The Mistake: Engaging with them in any way.
The Fix: Put on your blinders, keep a firm grip on your luggage, offer a polite but firm “No, gracias,” and do not stop walking until you are physically outside the terminal’s sliding glass doors.
2. Waiting at the Baggage Carousel

This might seem unavoidable, but for savvy travelers, it’s a strategic choice. During peak hours, the wait for checked luggage at Cancun Airport can easily stretch to an hour. You can watch in frustration as hundreds of carry-on passengers breeze past you and are already in their shuttles, sipping a cold water while you’re still waiting for the carousel to start moving.
The Mistake: Assuming you must check a bag.
The Fix: If you can, travel with only a carry-on. For a short trip, it’s a game-changer. You will bypass the longest wait in the entire airport, saving you precious vacation time and getting you to the pool that much faster.
3. Arriving Without a Data Plan

In 2025, landing without immediate access to data on your phone can be a major source of stress. You can’t contact your shuttle provider, pull up your hotel address, or let family know you’ve arrived safely. The Mistake: Assuming the airport Wi-Fi will be reliable or that you’ll figure it out when you land.
The Fix: Have a plan before you leave home. Many major U.S. carriers like AT&T and Verizon have “automatic” international day passes that are very convenient, but they come at a cost of around $10 per day. (Travelers with premium T-Mobile plans are often in luck, as high-speed data in Mexico may be included). The savviest, most cost-effective solution is to pre-purchase an eSIM from a provider like Airalo or Holafly. For a fraction of the cost of a week-long day pass, an eSIM gives you affordable, high-speed data the moment you turn off airplane mode.
4. Using the Airport Currency Exchange

Seeing the currency exchange kiosks right in the terminal can be tempting. You want to have some pesos in your pocket, and it seems convenient.
The Mistake: Exchanging your money at the airport.
The Fix: Wait. The exchange rates offered at the airport are notoriously the worst you will find in the entire region. You are paying a massive premium for the convenience. A far better strategy is to have a small amount of USD for initial tips and then withdraw pesos from an official, bank-branded ATM once you are in the Hotel Zone or at a major supermarket like Chedraui Selecto.
5. Not Having a Pre-Booked Transfer

This is the most critical mistake of all. After navigating the shark tank, you’ll be met with a chaotic curb scene of dozens of transport providers shouting for your attention. Trying to arrange a taxi or shuttle on the spot is confusing and almost always more expensive.
The Mistake: Waiting to book your ride until you arrive.
The Fix: The only way to guarantee a safe, fairly-priced, and stress-free start to your vacation is to pre-book your airport transfer with a reputable, licensed company. Your driver will be waiting for you outside, holding a sign with your name, ready to guide you past the chaos.

My husband and I traveled to cancun for the first time.It was the worst experience ever, we always travel for our birthday. When we arrived at the airport we couldn't get any help to find out where to get our shuttle which was pre booked before we traveled. No one spoke English so we left to figure it out by ourselves. We got our luggage and walked outside to see if our shuttle was out there but we did not see th r name of the company that we booked, we asked a few people and they responded by saying they don't speak English. We didn't know what to do so this one lady who was standing over to side of the building asked if we needed help and we said yes you speak English we were so happy to find someone who spoke English and she asked us what we needed and we told her that we're trying to find our shuttle to the airport so she said that she help us with the wifi so that we could contact the company, so she helped us but little did we know that she was selling the for the tour of the hotel. We got the shuttle company finally and they said that they didn't have us on their list,o lord so here we were stuck at the airport for almost an hour after landing.I had get the company that I booked with to confirm that I book the shuttle , they finally took us to the airport and we checked in to the hotel and they put us in a room that faced the marsh that stunk so bad we had to go back to the front desk and let them know that we were not going stay in that room so here we go again we had to wait for them to give us another room which they did and we finally got to go to our room and get some rest after all of that. When it was time for us to go home I contacted the shuttle and they said they would pick us up to go to the airport and they never showed we almost missed our flight we had to pay a taxi to get to the airport and we never got a refund from the company. Never again.
