Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean are by far the most popular tourist destination in Mexico this summer. Several new hotels have opened up recently in the area to accommodate the growing demand for the destination, and more are set to launch later in the year.  Meanwhile, hotel occupancy rates are rising across the state as millions of tourists are expected to visit the Mexican Caribbean over the following months.

New statistics reveal that 75% of all new hotel rooms in Mexico are found in Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean. The area saw nine major hotels open in the first few months of the year, adding 1665 new hotel rooms to the region’s already extensive supply. Over the course of the year, further openings will help accommodate an ever greater amount of visitors to Cancun and other top Caribbean destinations.

Canun has seen several large resorts open up this year. One of the biggest so far is Royal Resort’s new Hotel Royal Uno All Inclusive Resort & Spa in the heart of Cancun’s hotel district. The resort opened its doors in June, and its Caribbean-inspired design is meant to give guests a true taste of Cancun culture. The all-inclusive and family-friendly resort also features views of the adjacent beach, but the hotel also offers a family pool and sun deck.

Meanwhile, Hilton’s new 5-star Hilton Cancun opened up in late 2021, adding another 715 rooms to the city’s inventor. The luxurious resort was a major milestone for the company, which had been absent from the city for some years. The hotel is located in a privileged location nearby protected mangrove forests and stunning tropical beaches. With 12 different restaurants and even a fitness center, the hotel’s all-inclusive allure is sure to satisfy any traveler.

Other destinations in the Mexican Caribbean have also seen new hotels launch this year. Secrets Moxché Playa del Carmen was one of the first major hotels to open its doors this year in April. The resort offers 445 luxurious suites in the heart of the Mexican Caribbean, and guests can enjoy dining in twelve top-notch restaurants. Situated on a pristine Caribbean beach, the hotel has already gathered plenty of excellent reviews as Playa del Carmen consolidates its leading role in Mexico’s tourism industry.

With 186 rooms, the mid-scale Hilton Garden Inn Cancun Airport first welcomed guests in March. The hotel is a great choice for short-term stays and is the only hotel directly connected to the airport. At the same time, visitors enjoy close access to other top destinations around the area including Cancun, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen.

Several other brands are also launching new 5-star luxury hotels, including Hyatt’s Dreams Cozumel Cape Resort and Spa, which is set to open in September this year. The resort will feature 154 lavish suites located in Cozumel, one of the Mexican Caribbean’s most beautiful islands. The hotel’s gastronomy focuses on international flavors while its poolside bars offer the perfect opportunity to sip cocktails. A new Grand Hyatt Beach Resort is also in the making, which is set for inauguration sometime in 2024, adding an estimated 500 rooms to the area’s growing offering.

Despite new hotels opening, the area continues to see high occupancy rates as the summer vacation period kicks off. Some popular destinations such as Playa del Carmen only have 10% of all hotel rooms available, highlighting the Mexican Caribbean’s strong attraction for international tourists, especially from the United States and Canada. Meanwhile, Cancun hotels are currently reporting around an 80% occupancy rate but this will quickly rise as the summer season begins. Likewise, Cancun International Airport recorded over 620 flights over the past weekend, a new milestone for the summer.
