There are a lot of museums in Mexico, and even quite a few just in Cancun, and now one of those, the Mayan Museum of Cancun, was recently named one of the most popular in Mexico. The museum’s main focus is all aspects of Mayan civilization but it also includes information on the history, archeology, culture, architecture, and natural surroundings of the Riviera Maya area. Just since March of this year the Mayan Museum of Cancun has had more than 4,000 visitors walk through its doors.
The massive number of visitors that have toured the Mayan Museum located in Cancun has resulted in it falling into 7th place in regards to popularity throughout the country of Mexico. It had nearly 1,000 more visitors than the next most popular museum, Fuerte de San Miguel, which is located in Campeche and hosted just over 3,700 visitors in the same timeframe. The museum that came out just ahead of the Mayan Museum of Cancun is the Museo del Fuerte de San Juan de Ulúa, which is located in Veracruz and had 5,281 visitors.
The Mayan Museum of Cancun is made up of multiple buildings and outdoor areas for visitors to explore. Each building is home to different artifacts and art pieces and visitors will even find sculptures in various areas on the property grounds as well. In one building, the exhibition hall, visitors can view the Nichupté Lagoon and the San Miguelito jungle through clear glass windows with spectacular views. Visitors to the museum will also have access to the Archaeological Zone of San Miguelito.
Most importantly Cancun’s Mayan Museum displays the history of Mayan culture. In the part of the museum that focuses on this aspect of Mexican history, visitors will find pieces from the Mayan era that have been excavated from all over the area. Mayan calendars and writings, evidence of agricultural and economic practices, and a look at how the civilization ruled are all things you can find at this much-loved museum.
Mayan civilizations in the Yucatan Peninsula date as far back as 1800 B.C. and continued up until as late as 1500 A.D. They were considered to be highly advanced for their time in art, building, and agriculture. It wasn’t until around 900 A.D. that the Mayan civilization in the area fell apart for unknown reasons, although researchers do have some ideas as to what might have happened.
There are a total of 19 museums in the state of Quintana Roo, which is home to the city of Cancun. Of those 19 museums, 7 of them are located in and around Cancun, giving visitors plenty of opportunities to explore the culture and history of the area. While the Mayan Museum is not the only museum in Cancun it is the only one that made it on the list of the most popular. That is not to say that the others are not worth visiting, though, especially for those that come more for the cultural experiences than the Caribbean atmosphere.
Many tourists come to Cancun specifically for the beaches and they have plenty to offer in that respect too. This is why the tourism industry is growing so quickly in Cancun, with millions of tourists passing through the Cancun Hotel Zone every year. With breathtaking beaches and a vibrant nightlife, Cancun has something to offer everyone.
The Mayan Museum is only one of many things in Cancun that tourists can enjoy but it is one that will help tourists understand the culture and history that surrounds the area. It is one more of many elements of the city that make it continue to grow so quickly in popularity.
