The U.S. State Department has issued a Level 4 ‘Do Not Travel’ advisory for Mexico and over 100 countries. The warnings comes amid ‘unprecedented’ Covid-19 risks around the globe explained the State Department.
The Level 4 ‘Do Not Travel’ Advisory was issued to over 100 countries as the U.S. State Department said they were bringing their travel advisory system in line with the CDC warnings.
“As travelers face ongoing risks due COVID-19, we have updated our Travel Advisories to better reflect the CDC’s science-based Travel Health Notices,” stated the US State Department on Twitter.
“We also considered logistics like testing availability and travel restrictions for U.S. citizens.”
What Travelers Need To Know About The Advisories
Two of Americans favorite destinations, Mexico and the Dominican Republic were both upgraded from a level 3 to a level 4 travel advisory. All travelers with upcoming trips to level 4 destinations should check with their travel insurance providers to see if they are still covered under a level 4 advisory. Some travel insurance companies do not cover travelers when the highest level of advisory is issued.
Level 4 ‘Do Not Travel’ Advisory For Mexico
The US travel advisory for Mexico states “Do not travel to Mexico due to COVID-19. Exercise increased caution in Mexico due to crime and kidnapping. Some areas have increased risk.
The State Department Warns:
Do Not Travel To:
- Colima state due to crime.
- Guerrero state due to crime.
- Michoacán state due to crime.
- Sinaloa state due to crime.
- Tamaulipas state due to crime and kidnapping
There are currently no crime warnings for Cancun and the state of Quintana Roo.
The updated travel advisories are intended to curb traveling “to approximately 80% of countries worldwide” that are experiencing dramatic spikes in cases, the department said in a statement.
“In light of those risks, the Department of State strongly recommends U.S. citizens reconsider all travel abroad,” it said.
The United States hasn’t had a global advisory warning against international travel since August, when the advisory was revoked by the Trump administration.
The advice issued by the U.S. State department isn’t a formal global advisory. Instead, it says the State Department will start using CDC standards as it prepares health and safety guidelines for individual countries. Because of those standards, about 80% of countries will be classified as “Level 4” or “do not travel.”
For the most part, the travel advisories have fallen on deaf ears as millions of Americans continue to flock to Cancun.
