Cancun continues to defy the pandemic odds receiving over 400,000 American tourist arrivals in March according to the Secretary of Tourism. Americans continued to dominate the entire Mexican market with a total of 720,000 tourist arrivals to the country in March. The second biggest market of tourists came from Colombia registering 22,000 international arrivals in Mexico.
The Cancun International Airport was by far the busiest airport in the country recording 447,953 international passengers while Mexico city lagged far behind at 132,154 interantional passengers. The third place airport was recorded in Los Cabos which received 122 thousand tourists.
The absence of Canadian tourists was felt right across Mexico as strict entry regulations including a hotel quarantine and flight ban to sunny destinations has kept Mexico’s second largest tourist market at home.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently announced an extension on the flight bans and hotel quarantine that will last until at least June 21st as the country continues to battle a third wave of the pandemic and has a higher number of Covid-19 infections per capita than the United States.
The U.S. State Department issued a Level 4 ‘Do Not Travel’ advisory for Mexico and over 100 countries earlier this week. The warnings comes amid ‘unprecedented’ Covid-19 risks around the globe explained the State Department.
The Level 4 ‘Do Not Travel’ Advisory was issued to over 100 countries as the U.S. State Department said they were bringing their travel advisory system in line with the CDC warnings. While the travel advisory was upgraded to its highest warning level due to Covid-19, the number of cases in Quintana Roo area has continually declined. One exception is the tranquil beach town of Tulum which caters to a younger crowd. The number of Covid-19 infections in Tulum surged over 200% in the last week.
Although the state of Quintana Roo was reported as “being close to green”, it will remain in the yellow epidemiological light for at least one more week. On Thursday night, Governor Carlos Joaquin announced that due to a slight uptick in cases in Cancun and a surge in Tulum, the entire state will remain yellow from April 5 to 11.
