Tulum’s Azulik Hotel has been nominated at the Prix Villegiature 2022 Hotel Awards, as one of the best in the world under the ‘Hotel Artistic Universe’ category. This accolade is only awarded to hotels and resorts that display fantastic paintings or sculptures in their rooms or have a stylish interior and exterior design. The Azulik Hotel will compete alongside two hotels from France, one from Spain and a final hotel from Zacatecas, also in Mexico.
Other hotels in the Mexican-Caribbean have also been nominated for awards at the Prix Villegiature Hotel Awards this year, including Moon Palace at The Grand-Cancun: this family-friendly hotel was nominated alongside hotels in Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Greece in the category of ‘Best Hotel for Children’.
The Villegiature Awards began in 2003, rewarding the best hotels in the world based on certain categories, including functionality, design, and care for guests. Since its debut, hotels and accommodations boasting an award from this prestigious organisation have received international acclaim and global recognition for their services, thus encouraging more guests to visit, increasing tourism in each respective region.
The design of the hotel itself is a sight to behold. Guests looking to stay at the Azulik have the unique pleasure of staying in individual villas, specifically designed to minimise technology and maximise the guests’ appreciation of art and the natural environment.
Each villa has a different theme, such as the moon villa, jungle villa or sky villa – each reflecting the element in its title. The individual homes are constructed with natural materials found in the neighbouring jungle, placing an emphasis on an earth-tone colour pallet to encourage relaxation. Guests who have an eye for interior design will appreciate traditional furniture silhouettes made from Mexican materials, as well as the unique pieces of art that are displayed in each room.

Asides from the design of the hotel itself, Azulik also hosts two exhibition spaces for paintings and sculptures on-site: described as the ‘premier destination for contemporary art in Tulum’, the space hosts state-of-the-art design workshops as well at local artist residencies, so that visitors are able to experience authentic Mexican art without leaving the local area.

Even the exterior structures that make up the museum space are designed to be immersive works of art for visitors to look at, including asymmetrical walls and illuminated walkways.
In total, 11 nominated hotels are representing Mexico at the awards this year. If resorts and hotels from the Mexican-Caribbean win the awards, it will only help to further increase the attention on the region for supreme hospitality and tourist care.
The award ceremony is set to occur on October 17th in Paris, France, amongst hospitality representatives, established architects, personalities from the art world, and media and communication representatives. 22 press correspondents and editors-in-chief specialising in tourism are set to form a jury and make a decision on which accommodations have won certain titles.
