Tulum Sets New Laws To Close All Bars And Clubs At Midnight

Last Updated

As of last Friday, the City Council of Tulum stated its intention to implement a new set of rules for clubs and bars. The new rules state that all bars and clubs must refrain from playing loud music by 12 am at night, creating a huge issue for international travelers looking to party in the vibrant city.

The decision was made after the municipal president, Marciano Dzul Caamal, met with treasurer Diego Trejo, alongside members of Tulum’s City Council. The meeting occurred between multiple companies and tourism service providers in Tulum at the Wonders of the Caribbean conference.

The new rule came into play on Friday, September 23rd. Authorities began to officially notify bar and club owners during the day, whilst Quintana Roo’s Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection will begin to carry out preventative measures over the coming week.

Many businessmen and hoteliers present at the meeting were in favor of the new measure, stating that it would increase safety in tourist-populated areas. However, this is bad news for tourists visiting Tulum for the first time who want to explore the local bar and club scene.

Typically, tourists travel to Cancun for their dose of bars and clubs: the city is home to some of the most popular nightclubs in the region, including Coco Bongo and HRoof. In recent years, however, Tulum has increased the number of bars and clubs near the hotel zone, hosting some of the most varied and popular nights out in the Mexican-Caribbean.

Coco Bongo Nightclub

The most popular clubs and bars in the city, such as Casa Jaguar or Gitano, are well known for their excellent cocktails and pulsing music, not to mention stunning outdoor terraces. There are even multiple beach clubs to enjoy so that tourists can go straight from a day of sunbathing to hitting the dancefloor with the perfectly crafted cocktail.

Tulum is even home to one of the best 50 bars in North America – Arca. Famous for its dynamic use of Mezcal in a variety of different drinks, the bar is constantly filled with tourists from all over the world looking to taste some of the best drinks the Mexican-Caribbean has on offer.

Whilst bars and clubs are now closing earlier than before, tourists looking for a fun night out in Tulum do have other options. Individual resorts and all-inclusive hotels are set to have different rules for opening and closing times, meaning that guests staying there are still able to party late into the night.

Tourists that are desperate to experience a late night out on the town are encouraged to stay in Cancun or Playa del Carmen, as they open later for longer.

Antonio Laviada, a businessman in Tulum’s Hotel Zone, stated his support for the new measure:

“I definitely celebrate it…If I arrive and see a place open at 12:05, I know that the municipality is not complying. It is a measure in which everyone agrees. “

Restaurants and bars

The rules will continue as follows: Businesses that continue to serve food or drink to patrons after the 12 am curfew will be met with hefty fines. Furthermore, any instance of music being played over 65 decibels will also result in a fine, so that businesses ‘rethink before raising their volume’. Finally, after the businesses stop serving customers at 12 am, the entire facility must have its lights off and be locked by 1.00 am.

Whilst some visitors and companies are upset with the new measure going into place, Tulum’s treasurer, Diego Trejo, indicated that this venture was best for tourists and business owners alike;

“(The businesses) have to join Tulum… We have to return to that serenity that we had before with everyone’s support”.
