Hoteliers in Cancun are concerned over the recent increase in Covid-19 infections that brought the state of Quintana Roo back to the “Orange” level warning. Under the orange epidemiological warning level, hotels may operate at maximum 50% of capacity.
An additional 600 hotels in Cancun have received special authorization for operating at 70% capacity due to advanced Covid-19 prevention measures. That leaves 6900 hotels in the Mexican Caribbean that must operate at or below 50% if the warning stays at orange.
With many hoteliers reporting summer reservations above 60%, they are concerned the new increase in infections could lead to capacity problems and cancelations of reservations if the state stays orange or worse case scenario reverts back to red.
“If we do not all contribute to help change the epidemiological traffic light from orange to yellow, the summer holiday period will be of no use, because we will be totally limited in capacity,” said Iván Ferrat, president of the Caribbean Business Coordinating Council.
In an interview with Reportur.mx, The President of the Hoteliers in Cancun and Puerto Morelos (AHC), Roberto Cintrón highlighted the importance of vaccinating tourism employees and that the city of Cancun should be offering the Covid-19 vaccine to tourists as they do in the Dominican Republic.
Cintrón added that hotels could receive vaccines from outside sources quickly if they were granted permission to do so by The Mexico Federal Government.
“We have contacts with private laboratories that produce vaccines for the global market, we could have doses of vaccines purchased in the next 20 days, if the federal government granted us permission,” explained Cintrón.
Cancun is experiencing a record number of new Covid-19 cases.
For the second week, the state will remain in an orange epidemiological light. Governor Carlos Joaquin is warning of a possible return to red.
Joaquin stated that with the continued increase in infections, the state is closer to red than it is yellow and expressed concern about the large increase in Cancun.
“We see an increase and it is very dangerous. A lot of care and attention is required in Benito Juárez, which at the moment, has an increase of 65 percent,” he said.
Tulum is now seeing a slight decrease in cases after it saw a 200% surge in cases after Easter. Authorities have been strict in shutting down businesses and hotels in the area that continue to defy capacity restrictions.
