There’s no denying that Cancun is one of the most popular vacation destinations in Mexico because numbers simply don’t lie, and Cancun airport welcomed more than 30 million visitors in 2022.
But not everybody visits Cancun for the same reasons.
Many of the millions of people who visit every year go for the stunning white sand beaches, but not everyone sees it as just a beach destination.
Other Reasons To Visit Cancun
Some travelers choose Cancun because it’s a great starting point for exploring some of the Mayan ruins in the Riviera Maya region.
Others might simply enjoy taking a break from everyday life by relaxing poolside at one of the many luxury all-inclusive resorts.
Then there are those that visit the popular tourist destination seeking culture, and the Cancun neighborhood of Puerto Juárez could be the next hotspot for those culture-hungry travelers.

The Location Of Puerto Juárez
The Puerto Juárez district is located just a little over a mile from the center of Cancun and even has some of its own hotels and resorts, though not the huge luxury all-inclusive you’ll find in Cancun.
It sits directly across from the island of Isla Mujeres and is only a short distance from the Cancun Hotel Zone.
The location of Puerto Juárez gives visitors easy access to all that Cancun has to offer without having to be right in the middle of all of the action.

Puerto Juárez History
Since Puerto Juárez isn’t an area of Cancun that’s talked about much, you might be surprised at how important of a role it played in the area’s past.
It was where the people in the area lived before Cancun was an actual city.
It was also a completely separate location from Cancun between the years spanning from 1960 through 1990, after which it became a district of Cancun.

What To See In Puerto Juárez
In Puerto Juárez you’ll find the Ultramar Ferry that will take you to the island of Isla Mujeres, with departures leaving every half hour after 8 am.
The El Meco Mayan ruins are only a short distance away as well, and although not as big as some of the widely popular ruins like the Tulum ruins or Chichén Itzá, El Meco is not as crowded either.
Puerto Juárez is also home to a couple of different marinas where you can rent different types of watercraft, shop at souvenir stores, or just take in the views for a while.

Puerto Juárez Beaches
The beaches of Puerto Juárez not only offer amazing views of the Caribbean Sea but are the perfect place to relax on the beach.
Play del Niño, Playa Puerto Juárez, and a portion of Playa Tortuga are all beaches that make up part of the area.
And all of them are much more secluded than many of Cancun’s main beaches, so if you’re looking for some rest and relaxation rather than a beach party, this is the place to go.

The Future Of Puerto Juárez
Officials are now in the process of remodeling the Puerto Juarez area, and according to Mayor Ana Paty Peralta, they have “already started with the second stage, which is the part of the remodeling of the arches,” and they are “moving forward with the renovation and remodeling of Puerto Juárez.”
The Mayor will be seeking “Magic Neighborhood” status, and officials have plans to launch gastronomic and cultural events in Puerto Juárez in the near future.
It is the hope that with these changes, Puerto Juárez will be the newest tourist attraction in Cancun.
