Tourism in the Riviera Maya will change forever this December when the Maya Train begins operations. The train will make tourist destinations across the Yucatán Peninsula more accessible for visitors.
Even before the train is inaugurated, the tourism industry is preparing for new arrivals.
As soon as this July, 6 new hotels will open along the Maya Train route, according to the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena).
Let’s look at some of the new hotels that will open up along the Maya Train route for tourists this year:
Nuevo Uxmal Hotel
The Nuevo Uxmal Hotel is the closest of the new hotels to opening, according to Sedena.
While the other hotels listed have completed less than 4% of their construction, the Nuevo Uxmal Hotel has completed over 30% of its construction and is expected to be ready for business this July 30th.
The hotel will be in Santa Elena, Yucatán. Santa Elena is a small town, but it hopes to benefit from the Maya Train and bring in more tourism.
The top attraction in Santa Elena is the Uxmal Archaeological Zone. Uxmal is known for being a center of Mayan cosmology, and its most notable attraction is the Pyramid of the Magician.
The hotel will have 160 rooms, a gym, a restaurant and bar, and pools.
Hotel In Palenque
Another planned hotel will be in Palenque, Chiapas.
This hotel will have 160 rooms, a gym, restaurants, and bars.
It will be around a mile away from the Palenque Archaeological Zone. The zone is known for its intricate architectural features set against lush jungle habitats.
It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for being an “incomparable achievement of Mayan art.”
According to UNESCO, “Palenque bears a unique testimony to the mythology and the rites of the Mayas, notably in the incredible number of sculpted reliefs on interior walls of the palaces and temples.”
