Weeks deep into the traditionally slow summer season in the Riviera Maya, tourists from the United States and Canada continue to fill hotels and resorts throughout the region.
The Mexican Caribbean expects to receive 500,000 tourists a week this summer, according to Javier Aranda, director of the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Board (CPTQ).
Cancun and other regional destinations see the highest tourism rates in the winter and spring when North Americans flee the snow in search of the sun.
Traditionally, however, fewer tourists feel the need to fly south when the summer months warm up the countries to the north.
Nevertheless, tourists across the United States and Canada are discovering that the Riviera Maya remains a desirable destination year-round.
As the weather improves in North America, Cancun remains warm, and its beaches remain a great place to enjoy the summer sun.
Still, there are several summer tourism drivers that tourists should be aware of while planning their next trip.
Summer Vacation
This summer, many North Americans are taking advantage of school vacations and great weather during the tourism offseason.
“Right now, we are wrapping up for June, but we know that children have barely begun to leave school,” said Aranda. “We are going to see occupation rates above 80%, and we are talking about 128,000 rooms in all of Quintana Roo.”
As hotel occupation remains high, authorities throughout the Riviera Maya understand that the summer has just begun for families looking for a place where kids and adults can get a break.

For parents that want to be sure their children continue to learn while school is out, the region’s many archaeological sites and museums dedicated to Mayan civilization are a great place to teach young ones about human heritage.
Additionally, the Mexican Caribbean’s many pristine beaches are great for children to play while parents relax in the sun.
For those with kids looking for freedom, one of Cancun’s many all-inclusive resorts will provide a safe location for kids to explore without constant supervision.
Variety Of Destinations
Cancun remains the most widely recognized destination in the Riviera Maya, but it is not the only place tourists are flocking to this summer.
“We are seeing a fairly strong increase of operations for the summer, not only in the Cancun Airport but also in Cozumel,” reported Aranda.
Cozumel is an island off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula and a popular stop for cruise ships in the Caribbean.
In addition to Cancun and Cozumel, many tourists continue to visit Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Holbox, and Isla Mujeres.
Each of these locations is a major tourist destination in its own right. Whether tourists choose to stay in one of these beach cities or make it a day trip from their hotel in Cancun, they are all must-visit locations.
New Markets
North Americans are very familiar with the Riviera Maya, so it is no surprise that the main markets driving tourism in the region this summer are the United States and Canada.
In addition, local authorities hope to diversify the country of tourist origin, seeking to increase visibility in Spain, Germany, France, Japan, and the United Arab Emirates.
In addition, much attention has been paid to South American tourism.
Tourists from Brazil have had difficulty with their visas while visiting Cancun, a problem the industry hopes to resolve quickly.
According to Javier Aranda, the tourism industry continues to promote itself worldwide.
“We have to go searching for tourists where they may be because there are many rooms we have to fill,” he said.
Already a premier global destination, authorities throughout the Riviera Maya continue to improve the tourist experience and promote the region globally.
