Alongside Costa Mujeres, Puerto Morelos has become one of the most popular alternatives to Cancun for travelers seeking authentic experiences and fewer crowds.

Located around 35 kilometers south of the resort hotspot, Puerto Morelos is a hit among travelers thanks to its calm white-sand beaches, which offer some of the best snorkeling and diving opportunities.

In addition to that, the coastal town is a booming cultural hotspot, home to local markets, music festivals, and a tempting array of authentic restaurants.

It’s that authenticity that local businesses are now seeking to emphasize with the launching of new foodie and nature routes for travelers. With travelers flocking to the Mexican Caribbean in droves, a growing number of visitors are keen on experiencing the region’s offerings beyond the confines of their resorts.

Some restaurants in Puerto Morelos, such as El Pirata, a local eatery serving up Mexican cuisine, offer new ‘farm-to-table’ tours where patrons can choose and pick ingredients for their dishes.

Travelers opting for the sustainable experience will venture to a nearby rainforest to scout for fresh, organic produce, which is then used in preparing an array of local dishes.

“We have a vegetable patch right in the Ruta de los Cenotes, along the kilometer 19 road, which supplies all of our fresh produce. Passion fruit is now in season, so we have fresh juices, and cocktails, among others,” chef Karla Romo told reporters during a briefing on the new foodie experience.

And El Pirata isn’t the only restaurant focusing on locality; countless other establishments in Puerto Morelos have transitioned to sustainable food culture. With such a variety of local fruits and vegetables, restaurants can take full advantage of Puerto Morelos’s rich agriculture, where watermelons, starfruit, arugula, and green tomatoes are just a few of many staples.
