Over 1.9 Million Travelers Visited Quintana Roo This Summer

The Mexican Caribbean remains an immensely popular region for International travelers and by far the most visited state in Mexico. According to new statistics published by the State Secretariat for Tourism (SEDETUR), a whopping 1.9 million travelers flocked to the sunny region this summer.

That figure represents an impressive growth of nearly 5% compared to last year, which was already a record-breaking period for the sought-after destination.

This year, travel numbers are continuing to climb steadily as new investments bring improvement to everything from infrastructure to safety.

Chetumal

With a 9.7% growth rate compared to last year, Chetumal is officially one of the fastest-growing destinations in the Mexican Caribbean. Situated on the southern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Chetumal is the capital of Quintana Roo and a leading hotspot for cultural travel.

The coastal destination welcomed over 101,000 travelers this summer, and while that number pales in comparison to the likes of Cancun or Playa del Carmen, experts say the city is well on its way to becoming a mainstream hub for international travelers.

Bacalar

Bacalar is an eco-tourism hotspot and one of the most popular Pueblos Mágiocs (Magical Towns) in Mexico. Known for its vibrant culture, unique nature – especially its colorful lagoons – and a vast number of hip Airbnbs, the coastal destination is growing faster than ever.

Travel to Bacalar is up by over 7% compared to last year, as visitors flock to the trendy eco-hub in droves. This summer, the city implemented new measures to protect a growing number of travelers from organized crime and fake tour companies.

The efforts have contributed to the location’s improved reputation, and Bacalar is expected to continue to attract ever-growing amounts of visitors.

Cancun

A leading resort hotspot – not just in Mexico but the entire world – Cancun continues to top the charts as the most popular destination in Quintana Roo for mass travel. The sunny destination officially welcomed over 613,000 travelers this summer, which represents a growth rate of over 6% compared to the same period last year.

Although the destination isn’t growing as fast as other hotspots in the Mexican Caribbean in relative terms, Cancun has nearly maxed out its capacity, with resorts in the sunny resort hub selling over 85% of rooms this summer.

Costa Mujeres

Just a stone’s throw away from Cancun’s bustling hotel zone lies Costa Mujeres, a resort destination that many consider a contender to exceed Cancun’s level of luxury and opulence.

Offering quiet beaches, excellent safety, and several historical ruins, Costa Mujeres is quickly becoming one of the most popular destinations in the Mexican Caribbean. Home to a handful of luxurious resorts, the idyllic coastal hotspot is famous for its world-class gastronomy, with resorts like ATELIER Playa Mujeres boasting refined reservations-only restaurants.
