This fall, officials are gearing up to welcome up to 30% more digital nomads compared to last year as the coastal destination rises in popularity to become one of the main hubs for expat workers.

With that in mind, here’s the latest on Playa del Carmen’s growth as a top-tier location for digital nomads this fall.

Playa del Carmen’s Booming Tech Scene Attracts Growing Number Of Expats

Situated just south of Cancun, Playa del Carmen is already a well-known resort destination, boasting some of the best beaches and city culture in all of the Mexican Caribbean. But this year, the town’s popularity as a hub for digital entrepreneurs is skyrocketing, with projections indicating a record number of skilled foreign workers moving to the coastal destination.

Playa del Carmen’s soaring popularity can be attributed to several factors, including its excellent work-life balance, improved public safety, and its vibrant culture.

Although digital nomads have been flocking to the city for several years already, most remote workers set up shop in the sun-drenched destination during the shoulder season, which commences in September.

Lasting until mid to late November, the low season is an ideal time to enjoy everything Playa del Carmen has to offer; from empty beaches to affordable resorts, it’s a world apart from the hectic scenes travelers are likely to find during the busy summer months.

And that’s why officials are gearing up to welcome more digital nomads than ever this fall. According to the Mexican Caribbean’s subsecretary for tourism, Omar Govea, Playa del Carmen is uniquely positioned as a hub for entrepreneurs and remote workers.

The city’s economy is highly developed and dynamic and is home to a growing number of high-tech firms. And with digital nomads bolstering demand for faster Wi-Fi and reliable telecommunications, officials are investing more resources into making the coastal hotspot one of the most tech-friendly in the region.

Digital nomads can find a number of co-working spaces dotted across Playa del Carmen. These trendy locations promise to boost productivity, foment networking, and offer respite from the often confined living spaces that many digital nomads are used to.

Some of the most popular co-working spaces include Cowork In, an affordable and hip office with high-speed Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and all the bells and whistles that digital nomads need to meet their deadlines.

Nest Coworking is another top-rated option for remote workers; with a focus on networking and business events, the innovative co-working office is the perfect choice for those who are looking to expand their social network while getting some work done.

Playa del Carmen’s unbeatable work-life balance is often cited as a reason for the city’s remarkable popularity. Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue), Playa del Carmen’s main avenue, is dotted with bars and restaurants that come to life in the evening hours. Meanwhile, its beaches are the perfect location to kick back after a long day of work.

Aside from offering an excellent array of services oriented towards digital nomads, Playa del Carmen has invested heavily in improving safety and tackling organized crime. As a result, the coastal destination has just wrapped up one of the safest summers on record, with minimal incidents affecting travelers.
