The number of noise complaints filed by residents and travelers across the Mexican Caribbean is on the rise this year.
As the region continues its upward trend in popularity, Quintana Roo’s bars, restaurants, and nightclubs are busier than ever.
And with arrival figures expected to further skyrocket towards the end of the year, officials are considering the need to implement more restrictions to keep noise levels under control.
With that in mind, here’s a round-up of the noisiest places in the Mexican Caribbean and what travelers can do to avoid them.
Cancun’s Lively Party Scene Draws Growing Crowds
Cancun has been one of the world’s leading party destinations for over a decade already. The resort hotspot is home to a number of famous nightclubs and bars, which attract thousands of travelers each day – and night.
With so many travelers packed into one rather small location, it’s no wonder that Cancun tops the charts as the noisiest destination in the entire Mexican Caribbean.

That’s according to new statistics published by local officials, which reveal that the coastal destination is responsible for around 70% of all noise-related complaints in Quintana Roo.
Cancun is home to several rather noisy neighborhoods: the resort zone, home to the vast majority of Cancun’s most famed resorts and hotels, as well as the city’s downtown area, which boasts hundreds of local bars and restaurants.

Travelers seeking a quieter stay in Cancun should opt for resorts situated in the southern portion of the Resort Zone, which offers fewer nightlife options and more remote beaches.
Meanwhile, the northern part of the resort area around Playa Gaviota Azul and Playa Chacmool is notorious for its boisterous nightlife, with nightclubs like Coco Bongo attracting a fair amount of party-goers.
The second-noisiest destination in the Mexican Caribbean is Playa del Carmen, which is also famous for its lively party scene and outgoing locals. The coastal hotspot, around an hour south of Cancun, is dotted with bars and restaurants along its main avenue, Quinta Avenida.

While Playa del Carmen is currently the second-highest in noise complaints among resort cities, it seems to have a much better situation than Cancun, as only 12% of all complaints come from Playa del Carmen’s residents.
Chetumal, the bustling capital of the Mexican Caribbean state of Quintana Roo, is officially the third-noisiest destination in the touristy region. Representing around 8% of all noise-related complaints, the state capital is attracting a growing number of travelers thanks to its vibrant city life and vibrant culture.
Here’s What Officials Are Doing To Control Noise Levels
Having to deal with noisy neighbors can be an unpleasant experience, especially for those who travel in search of peace of mind. Fortunately, local authorities across the region have been paying more attention to the issue and are generally quick to respond to rowdy partygoers.
Nightlife establishments across the Mexican Caribbean have to abide by certain limitations when it comes to noise levels.
For example, in Cancun, noise levels in bars, restaurants, and nightclubs cannot exceed 65 decibels from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., a measure intended to protect residents from the harmful effects of loud noises.

And while now all establishments follow those protocols, police and law enforcement are stepping up measures to fine law-breaking nightclubs in an effort to protect residents and locals for excessive noise levels. Tulum and other Mexican Caribbean destinations have also passed regulations introducing stricter laws to keep decibels within reasonable limits.
