As the Mexican Caribbean heads into the shoulder season – the quietest time of the year for travel to the sun-soaked region – one destination is expected to soar above the rest in popularity thanks to its impeccable beaches.
Tulum, the most famous cultural and historical hub in Quintana Roo, also boasts a handful of stunning white-sand beaches. The coastal hotspot’s powdery shores are now in better shape than in many months as sargassum levels drop drastically.
With more travelers flocking to Tulum this fall, here’s the latest on why now is the best time to plan a beach trip to the magical destination.
Sargassum Forecast Paints A Positive Outlook For Tulum
Sargassum seaweed has been a major obstacle for countless Mexican Caribbean resort destinations this year, including Tulum, whose beaches are typically among the most affected by the smelly seaweed.
But with the sargassum season slowly ending, authorities are already reporting a sharp decrease in the quantity of seaweed washing up on Tulum’s white-sand beaches.
Combined with new government efforts to bolster cleanliness, Tulum’s beaches are now in better shape than in a long time, making this fall one of the best times to flock to the coastal hotspot.

That positive outlook coincides with the latest sargassum forecast published by the Quintana Roo Sargassum Monitoring Network, an organization comprised of environmental experts and beach enthusiasts.
Of the 100 beaches monitored by the network, a whopping 80 were classified as having low sargassum levels, including all of those found in Tulum. Four of the main beach regions in the resort destination are currently enjoying minimal sargassum levels, a situation which officials expect to continue until November when the seaweed season officially ends.

Despite welcoming fewer travelers than during the busy summer and winter months, Tulum’s travel industry is feeling bullish about the destination’s ability to attract more visitors this fall.
And most of that optimism has to do with Tulum’s excellent beaches, many of which have been awarded the prestigious and highly sought-after Platinum Certification by Mexican environmental officials.

This summer, Tulum was one of the most affected destinations by the arrival of tons of sargassum seaweed. A recurring issue for the sunny hotspot, officials have invested heavily in new machinery and barriers to deter sargassum from scaring tourists away.
Officials are now working on advertising Tulum as a unique destination, offering not only culture and history but also some of the cleanest beaches in Quintana Roo.

According to Alejandro Peraza, the head of a Tulum-based excursion firm, “Tulum boasts unique offerings thanks to the combination of its beaches, the beauty of its sea, jungles, and ancient ruins.”
Tulum Projected To Soar In Popularity This Year
The Mexican Caribbean is currently heading into the shoulder season, which lasts until mid-November. After a brief period of lower occupancy, the region is expected to have a record-breaking winter season.
Tulum, too, is gearing up for the busiest year on record for travel. That’s largely due to the completion of the Maya Train, the Mexican government’s flagship infrastructure project, set for completion in December this year.

Boasting the most popular Mayan ruins in the Mexican Caribbean, Tulum is naturally a huge priority for the government. Upon completion, the coastal city is expected to see double-digit growth in arrival numbers as more travelers flock to Tulum’s vast Archeological Zone.
A brand new museum is also in the making, which is set to open its doors to travelers in the Jaguar National Park, further helping boost Tulum’s cultural relevance.
