Tulum International Airport began operations recently, seeing a number of national flight routes begin transporting passengers to and from the trendy destination that is growing in popularity.
All eyes are on the Tulum’s international flight routes, however, which begin operations this March.
With heavyweight U.S airlines such as American, Delta, United and Spirit flying from a whole host of popular U. S cities such as Dallas, Austin, Chicago and New York, Tulum is set to welcome millions of new guests in the coming year.
As more and more flights are announced for the new “Felipe Carrillo Puerto” terminal, in an attempt to sell the most tickets to passengers, the well known bus service ADO has recently announced that it will be increasing the amount of buses available.

Increased Bus Service From Tulum Airport
This announcement comes after a swathe of complaints from travelers and local businesses who expressed their disappointment over how little public transport services were available for them at the new airport.
Taxis and private transfers were, only until recently, the only option for passengers who were left feeling like they were being ripped off by the increasingly high prices set by the companies.

Tulum’s new international airport, along with the new Maya Train, was introduced to offer both tourists and locals affordable and better-connected transport options, so it comes as no surprise that so many complaints began circulating.
Thankfully, ADO responded to the demand and announced that, along with their already limited numbers of departures to and from the new terminal, they would also be increasing them in the coming weeks.
Lourdes Jimenez Rojo, commercial manager of Mobility ADO in the Riviera Maya, stated that “as flights increase, more demand for the bus service continues, with more people looking to travel to Cacalar, Mahahual, Chetumal, Chiquita and Cancun from the airport.”
While there is a huge demand for the service, it is currently winter peak season in southeastern Mexico, and so getting an accurate picture of just how many buses will need to be available for tourists is uncertain.
As some airlines have already begun reaching full capacity with their international flights to Tulum International Airport, however, it is becoming ever clearer that the service will continue to be needed.
Though the Maya Train is yet to be fully operational to Tulum Airport, and is experiencing significant teething problems with its initial routes between Palenque to Cancun, ADO is an alternative option for tourists that actually works out to be similar in ticket pricing.
One thing is for certain; the ADO prices are far more accessible for tourists compared to the taxi drivers of the destination, that have been known to charge an upward of 1000 pesos ($58.28 USD) for airport transfers.
What You Need To Know About The New Tulum Airport
- Felipe Carrillo Puerto is around 40 kilometers southwest of downtown Tulum, meaning it’s not completely near the main tourist areas. You will need to arrange travel to reach your hotel, such as the ADO service mentioned above, or by taxi or private transfer.
- The current international airlines that are set to fly from the U.S. to the new Tulum International Airport are American Airlines, Delta, United, Spirit, and JetBlue, and they are expected to start operating anywhere between March and June of 2024. Flying from Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, New York, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston, these airlines are expected to be busy, busy, busy.
- The airport is enhancing its security and will be operated by the Mexican Air Force, with troop deployments on hand to protect those arriving and departing from the destination.
- Tulum Airport will now allow tourists to be more connected and closer to some of the region’s incredible hidden gems such as ancient Mayan Ruins, eco-centered attractions, and ‘Magical Towns.’ With the Maya train set to be fully operational by February 29th, Tulum will better connected than it ever has been before.
