Even before the start of the spring break holidays, Cancun and Tulum, two of the top Mexican Caribbean hotspots, are expecting record-breaking numbers of visitors.
Hotel occupancy rates at both destinations are set to exceed 80%, according to the Federal Secretary of Tourism (Sectur).
For the upcoming long weekend of March 15th to 18th, Cancun and Tulum hotels are expecting 83.% and 81% occupancy rates, respectively.
This is a noticeable growth compared to the same time period last year, when Cancun reached 80.2% and Tulum 78.5%.
Cancun’s reputation as a spring break haven is not exactly a secret, as it consistently tops the charts of the favorite international spring break destinations, especially for American travelers.
Nevertheless, Tulum is quickly becoming an increasingly sought-after choice as well. In fact, travel experts recently placed it along Cancun in a list of the hottest international destinations in spring 2024.
So, here are 5 reasons why this spring might just be the busiest ever for these popular Mexican Caribbean destinations.
Enhanced Accessibility
While 2023 was the best year for tourism ever in the Mexican Caribbean, 2024 will likely be even more successful, as two massive infrastructure projects are set to be completed – the Maya Train and the Tulum International Airport.
Just a few days ago, the Maya Train section connecting the Cancun – Playa del Carmen section was inaugurated – well, sort of.
There was indeed an inauguration ceremony, but travelers eagerly waiting to purchase tickets were left with no information as to when and where they would become available.

Still, Cancun travelers will be able to ride the Maya Train to conveniently access several destinations across the region this spring, including Chichen Itzá and Mérida City in Yucatan.
On the other hand, the highly anticipated Tulum International Airport will start welcoming international travelers by March 29th and will likely be an instant game-changer for air connectivity in the region.
With the introduction of international routes featuring major carriers like Delta, Spirit, and American Airlines, reaching the trendy beach town – currently a somewhat long (and pricey) trip from Cancun – will be much easier and potentially cheaper.
More Accommodation Options Than Ever
One big reason travelers love the Mexican Caribbean is its exceptional and incredibly diverse hospitality scene.
The Hotel Zone in Cancun is famous for its luxurious all-inclusives, while Tulum offers everything from quaint eco-boutique hotels to award-winning all-inclusive resorts.
Both destinations regularly introduce new luxury resorts, including the recently inaugurated Secrets Tulum and the upcoming Grand Hyatt Cancun Beach Resort.
Interestingly enough, the aforementioned report by Sedetur also highlighted a rising trend – the use of digital platforms like Aribnb for booking vacation rentals, both by domestic and international travelers.
So, with so many accommodation options to choose from, it’s no surprise that so many travelers are selecting these hotspots as their next spring break getaway.
Gorgeous Caribbean Beaches
It’s impossible to overlook how much the beaches at both Cancun and Tulum contribute to their overall popularity.
The best part is that both destinations offer entirely different beach experiences. Both feature gorgeous white sand beaches and turquoise waters, but Cancun beaches, such as Playa Delfines or Playa Chac Mool, tend to be more lively and crowded.
On the other hand, beaches at Tulum, like Playa Paraiso, are known for their laid-back vibe and natural beauty, not to mention the impressive Mayan ruins found atop a cliff by the Playa Ruinas beach.
Excellent Spring Weather
There’s arguably no better season to visit the Mexican Caribbean than spring, but it all depends on your personal preferences.
On the one hand, the winter season brings warm enough weather to enjoy the beautiful beaches and other activities, but it does get slightly chilly at night, especially if it’s windy.
On the flip side, summer is generally way too hot for most tourists, and while you can certainly enjoy a beach day, embarking on other tours or other activities might quickly become unbearable.
In spring, temperatures are actually only slightly cooler compared to the summer months. However, there’s much less humidity, significantly reducing the sensation of warmth, plus there’s always a nice breeze to cool you off.

The Mexican Caribbean’s enviable spring weather makes it perfect for enjoying a variety of activities – and there’s no shortage of these at both Cancun and Tulum.
Snorkeling, exploring cenotes or archeological sites, visiting the iconic Xcaret parks, dining out, enjoying a relaxing day at more secluded destinations like Puerto Morelos or Akumal – the list goes on.
