Sewage Affecting Tourist Operations At Cancun Airport

Last Updated

Tourists are dealing with a stinky situation upon arriving at Cancun International Airport in the Mexican Caribbean.

According to several tourist reports and the media outlet Reportur, sewage is leaking from the terminal onto the aircraft apron and tarmac and is affecting the tourist operations at the facility.

Sewage Impacting Tourists

Busy Cancun Airport

Not only is the smell bad at the main international terminal at Cancun International Airport, but there may be several health issues brewing as well.

According to social media accounts, as reported by Reportur, several of the workers are constantly walking across wet sewage areas located underneath the passenger jetways.

They are also transporting passenger luggage in vehicles above the sewage, where it may be splashing on the passenger belongings as well.

Several passengers and the local media are putting the blame for the smell and unhealthy conditions at the airport directly on the publicly-traded operator of the facility, Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR).

Occurring For Several Days

The reports of the sewage problems at Cancun International Airport have been coming for several days now with no resolution by officials at the facility.

Some passengers have gone as far on social media to request that the sewage issue be declared as affecting “international health” as there are so many tourists from around the world that use Cancun International Airport as their point of arrival and departure from the Mexican Caribbean.

They have also voiced concerns that during the tropical weather season in Cancun, the rainwater flows from the ceilings and the drainage water flows through the passenger restrooms at the terminal.

Declaring the issue an international health issue would escalate the problem to the federal health department level as they are responsible for overall management of travelers to the country.

However, they would most likely transfer the issue to Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) as ultimately they are the responsible party for the health and welfare of the passengers at Cancun International Airport.

Building List of Complaints

This just adds to the list of complaints waged recently against Cancun International Airport and its operator, Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR), about the conditions at the terminal.

Passengers have also been upset related to the delays and treatment of vacation travelers at the airport by the airlines.

They even went as far as to reactivate a complaint desk at the airport for tourists to offer their feedback about issues and recommendations on how to improve the international terminal facilities.

Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) has been working with tourists, the airlines and its vendors to try to resolve the issues affecting the guest experience at the airport.

However, many visitors feel that little progress has actually been made.

The competition of the brand new Tulum International Airport opening for international flights from the United States in just weeks may be putting pressure on Cancun International Airport to improve their overall international guest experience.

What Travelers Need to Know

Just like any public facility, it is important for tourists to provide their candid feedback to airport officials on how to improve Cancun International Airport.

The feedback should not only include what is wrong with the airport or what needs to be repaired.

It should provide information on what tourists would like to see at the airport, such as additional restaurant options, so that plans can be made to improve the experience for all passengers.

With added competition, there is renewed interest in improving the passenger experience and remaking the facilities as desired by travelers to the Mexican Caribbean.

Infrastructure is a must. AMLO should use some of those US 20B of the Train Maya to fix problems. Not only in Cancun but in HolBox and all tourist areas.
