The much-awaited Cancun to Playa del Carmen Maya Train route is officially up and running, with some travelers already publishing reviews of the new service.
With a maximum capacity of up to 221 passengers per train, the 45-kilometer route is set to revolutionize transportation between two of the leading resort hotspots in the Mexican Caribbean.
Offering premium comfort and safety and significantly cutting down on travel times, the Maya Train has received excellent feedback from the first few lucky users.
As the Maya Train ramps up frequencies, here’s what travelers are saying about the new Cancun to Playa del Carmen route.
First Passengers On Cancun To Playa del Carmen Maya Train Report Positive Experience
Friday was a historical day for Cancun and Playa del Carmen as the first-ever Maya Train route began operating between the two cities. Although the connection was formally inaugurated earlier this month, the service was closed to travelers – until now.
With technical tests out of the way, the route has been given the green light to officially kick off operations, allowing for travelers to benefit from the new service. On Friday, some 20 passengers purchased tickets for the inaugural ride.
And although that number is just a fraction of the train’s maximum capacity, travel numbers will skyrocket in the coming weeks as more tickets become available.
Officially known as the Northern Fifth Section – connecting Cancun International Airport with Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen – the 45.6-kilometer route links several of the region’s leading resort hotspots.
According to operators at the Cancun airport Maya Train station, around 20 intrepid travelers purchased tickets for the first-ever service to Playa del Carmen.
Upon arrival at the Playa del Carmen train station – located some 10 kilometers from the city’s downtown area – passengers reported feeling satisfied with the comfort & speed of the new railway system.
On the other hand, some users reported feeling frustrated over the lack of information with regard to where and how to purchase tickets.
Some users also noted the poor public transit options at Playa del Carmen’s Maya Train station, with costly taxis or Ubers as the only viable means to reach their hotel or resort.
But that’s set to change soon as ADO, the largest bus operator in the Mexican Caribbean, plans to launch several daily departures to carry arriving Maya Train passengers to downtown Playa del Carmen.
According to a spokesperson from the bus company, one-way tickets will cost just shy of $4, whereas a taxi ride could set travelers back as much as $30.
In the coming weeks, passenger numbers on the new route are set to skyrocket as more tickets become available on the Maya Train’s official website.
Travelers can choose from several daily departures depending on the day.
The 1-hour-long journey has one stop in Puerto Morelos, with tickets costing around $18 for international travelers.
Despite a number of technical faults affecting operations on the Cancun – Palenque route, the Maya Train has already transported tens of thousands of people.
The launching of the new Playa del Carmen route comes at a time of soaring arrival figures and will lessen travel chaos at Cancun airport, where exorbitant taxi fares continue to plague arriving visitors.
In addition to cutting down on travel times, the Maya Train will be an experience in and of itself, providing travelers with all the modern comforts needed to travel in style.
From onboard dining to improved safety, the new railway system ticks all the right boxes.
