According to the Secretary of Security for the Solidarity government of Playa del Carmen, Raúl Tassinari, the popular coastal destination is intensifying safety measures to protect travelers this year amid skyrocketing demand for the coastal hotspot.

Home to some of the most popular beaches in the Mexican Caribbean, Playa del Carmen is one of the leading destinations in the Riviera Maya.

From its white-sand beaches to its vibrant city streets, officials are launching a proactive safety campaign ahead of the anticipated travel frenzy this spring.

Although the coastal destination remains of the safest in the region, petty crime & beach safety are two areas that warrant more attention from local authorities.

With that in mind, here’s a look at what Playa del Carmen is doing to ramp up safety for travelers this spring.

Playa del Carmen Committed To Maintaining Excellent Safety This Spring For Travelers

As the busy Easter holidays approach, officials in Playa del Carmen are ready to launch a new safety campaign to protect travelers.

While the city welcomes thousands of travelers each day throughout the year, spring is one of the peak travel times for the sunny destination.

That’s especially true as millions of Americans head south in search of warm weather & endless partying during Spring Break.

This extremely busy period for Playa del Carmen – mid-March until early April – also coincides with an increase in reports of risky behavior, including injuries and even drownings.

This year, authorities in the sunny destination are launching a proactive safety operation involving all levels of civil protection & law enforcement.

The goal, local officials say, is to protect travelers during one of the busiest times of the year, and to maintain the city’s excellent reputation among travelers.

According to Raúl Tassinar, Playa del Carmen’s head for public safety, the city will deploy more officers to patrol busy city streets and to look out for travelers on beaches, among other locations.

“Just like every year, we are launching, together with Civil Protection units, an operation during the Easter Holidays to protect locals and travelers,” the functionary said in a media interview.

Playa del Carmen is renowned for being a safe family-friendly destination, welcoming over a million travelers in 2023 alone.

Officials will pay close attention to numerous factors that are closely related to safety, especially when it comes to aquatic activities like ferries, boat tours, and swimming.

With the coastal destination filling up with young travelers, excessive alcohol intake poses a risk for partygoers.

And although most law enforcement deployments will focus on securing local beaches, travelers can expect to see officers patrolling downtown Playa del Carmen as well as peripheral urban areas.

Earlier this year, local government officials in Playa del Carmen announced that the city would build up to nine new lifeguard towers to improve beach safety.

In the same vein, a sizeable contingent of lifeguards will patrol local beaches to prevent drownings.

Law enforcement units will also integrate efforts to deter crime through the C5 command center, which provides police officers with real-time information & surveillance capabilities.

The coastal destination has made significant investments in new high-tech cameras to improve traffic & decrease petty crime like theft.

Playa del Carmen is now gearing up for one of the busiest spring seasons on record as the Maya Train officially begins operations.

The new Cancun to Playa del Carmen route is now open to travelers, although with limited departures. Visitors can purchase trinkets for the new service on the Maya Train’s official website.
