Rising temperatures are straining the region’s power grid, affecting the supply of electricity to hotels & businesses.

In Tulum, the issue is mostly affecting smaller properties, causing concern among arriving visitors.

Despite calls to shore up the region’s failing power network, blackouts have become increasingly commonplace this summer.

Hot Summer Weather Means Bad News For Small Hotels In Tulum

Tulum is one of the fastest-growing resort destinations this summer in the Mexican Caribbean, as the city’s new international airport begins to welcome more travelers.

Some visitors will have to cope with a new type of problem that is currently affecting dozens of properties in the sunny destination.

According to media reports, power outages and blackouts have plagued numerous hotels in Tulum this summer. Primarily affecting properties in downtown Tulum, the blackouts have been described as constant and relentless.

The situation is especially worrisome for properties with 20 or fewer rooms, which depend entirely on the public power grid.

Vacation rentals are also suffering the effects of growing blackouts, leading many travelers to cancel their bookings or even to leave their property prior to their check out.

Fortunately, Tulum is also home to dozens of spectacular all-inclsuives. Offering a greater degree of comfort for guests, larger resorts also have generators which can be deployed at short notice, mitigating the effects of the ongoing blackouts.

In a recent media interview, representatives from Tulum’s Hotel Maya and Hotel Kukulcán expressed their frustration over the authorities’ handling of power issues, urging officials to invest in shoring up the grid.

Although temperatures this week will be significantly cooler than in previous weeks, intense summer heat during late June and July is expected to exacerbate Tulum’s power issues.

Tulum isn’t the only sun-soaked destination in the region to suffer from blackouts. Island destinations like Cozumel and especially Holbox have received numerous travel complaints over unreliable power supplies, especially during hurricane season.

With that in mind, opting for one of Tulum’s excellent all-inclusives may be a safer choice compared to smaller accommodations. Some of the city’s top choices include the 5-star Ahau Tulum By Ahau Collection or the recently-opened Secrets Tulum Resort & Beach Club.

Despite rising complaints over power cuts, Tulum is poised to be one of the most popular Mexican Caribbean destinations this summer. The coastal city is set to benefit massively from the brand-new Tulum International Airport, which welcomes flights from several U.S. airports.

Meanwhile, the expansion of the Maya Train railway system to Tulum later this summer will bring even more tourists close to the Mayan heart of the Mexican Caribbean.

Home to numerous smaller villages and towns, the Tulum region boasts impressive Mayan ruins such as the massive Cobá ruins.

Travelers have several options for accommodation; while most towns outside of Tulum primarily offer vacation rentals and smaller boutique hotels, travelers may be better off booking an all-inclusive in Tulum, opting for day trips to nearby destinations.
