Cancun is one of the most popular beach vacation destinations in the world and gets millions of tourists every year.
It’s so popular that the cost of vacationing in the destination has gotten pretty expensive, more expensive than a lot of other similar destinations.
If you’ll be vacationing in the tropical paradise soon, then check out these 5 tips to save.
The Report
Conde Nast released a report from the Post Office UK that’s based on a study of the most affordable and most expensive vacation destinations around the world.
Cancun made the list of the top 10 most expensive destinations along with places like New York, Downtown Dubai, and Punta Cana.
Any vacation destination can be made less expensive, though, if you simply plan the right way.
Tip #1 – Choose Your Dates Wisely
When it comes to vacation destinations as popular as Cancun, the dates you travel matter.
Prices for everything from plane tickets to hotels are typically higher during the busy seasons and lower during slower seasons.
For examples, flying from Miami to Cancun round trip from July 6th to July 13th will run you $314 minimum.
Change those dates to the 9th through the 17th and you’ll pay $260. While not a massive difference it can add up if you are traveling as a group!
Check it out for yourself on Google Flights here.
In Cancun, the high seasons are the winter months and spring break, so unless you’re going to escape the cold or for a spring break vacation, you may want to travel to the destination in the late spring, summer, or early fall.
Tip #1 Continued – Day Of The Week Matters Too
The day of the week you choose also plays a role in how much you’ll pay for flights and accommodations.
Weekdays are almost always cheaper for both, and the difference can be significant.
There’s also the added bonus that there will likely be fewer crowds when vacationing on weekdays.
Tip #2 – Shop Around For Your Hotel
Nightly hotel rates greatly vary from one hotel to the next, even within the same category, so shopping around is important.
First, decide on the area you want to stay in, then choose your preferred type of hotel, and then shop around from there.
The difference in the nightly rate for all-inclusives in Cancun, for example, can be more than $1,500!
Tip #3 – Book Transportation In Advance
One thing many Cancun visitors may not know, especially first-time visitors, is that booking airport transportation in advance can be less expensive than booking upon arrival.
Fares for a taxi from Cancun Airport to the Hotel Zone start at around $25 when booked online, but booking in person pushes that starting rate up to $45.
The final rate depends on where you’re going, but the difference in price between booking in advance or waiting is significant.
Tip #4 – Search For Free And Low-Cost Activities
For being such an expensive vacation destination, there is a surprising amount of free and low-cost things to do in and around Cancun.
Visiting the beaches, which is the number one thing to do in Cancun, is completely free.
Additionally, you can visit Mayan ruins and a museum in Cancun, and visit the Ka’Yok Planetarium for just a few dollars each, and you can watch live music at Plaza La Isla Cancun, and stroll through the Parque de las Palapas for free.
Tip #5 – Consider An All-Inclusive
All-inclusives can be pricey, but you might be surprised by how much money you can actually save by choosing one for your Cancun vacation.
You’ll have all of your meals, snacks, and drinks included in the price, which can take up a significant amount of your vacation budget otherwise.
At most all-inclusives entertainment and several activities are also included.
