4 Reasons Why This Is The Most Underrated Option To Get From Cancun Airport To The Hotel Zone

Arriving at the airport of a vacation destination is exciting, but it’s only the first step toward getting to the hotel or vacation rental that you get to call home for the next several days.

Transportation from the airport is often an afterthought, but in Cancun, choosing your transportation wisely is important.

One of your options is the ADO bus, and there are four reasons why this is the most underrated option to get from Cancun Airport to the Hotel Zone.

ADO Bus at a Station in Cancun, Mexico

1.  It’s More Comfortable Than You Think

A bus might not seem like the most comfortable place to ride after arriving at your vacation destination, but the ADO buses in Cancun are more comfortable than you think, according to some travelers.

The buses have comfortable cushioned seats and air conditioning.

Best of all, though, they have TVs as well, which is really nice if you’re taking the bus beyond Cancun.

2.  It’s Convenient

Not only are the public buses comfortable but pretty convenient too.

There is a red ADO bus kiosk right outside the airport exit. Tickets for all of the destinations that the buses travel to are for sale, and the rates are clearly listed.

You can also book tickets in advance here at the ADO Bus website.

The buses also have storage space underneath, so transporting luggage won’t be a problem either.

3.  It’s Safe

With everything going on between taxi and Uber drivers, an ADO bus is probably one of the safer ways to get around, especially from the airport.

Even private citizens are being stared down by taxi drivers when they go to the airport to pick up family and friends.

The buses allow locals and visitors to avoid this.

4.  It’s The Most Affordable Option

One thing about the ADO bus service is for sure, and that is that you won’t find a more affordable option.

The trip from Cancun Airport to the station in the center of Cancun costs less than $7.

Even to get to someplace as far away as Tulum is just over $20, and to get to Playa del Carmen, it’s only around $13.

Getting From The Bus Station To Your Hotel

As mentioned above, the ADO bus will take you from the airport to the ADO bus station in El Centro, which is downtown Cancun, not to your hotel.

From the station, you can book an Uber to get to your hotel, because Uber can legally operate in Cancun, just not at the airport.

There’s also the Didi platform, which is similar to Uber, and was recently reported to cost around $8 to get from the bus station to the Hotel Zone.

The Issues With Taking Taxis

There are a couple of issues with taking taxis to and from the airport that might make you want to choose an alternative option.

One is the price, as taxis can cost over $60 for a one-way trip between the airport and the Hotel Zone.

Another issue is the presence of “pirate” taxis, which are essentially fake taxis or people posing as taxi drivers.

Why You Can’t Take An Uber To Or From The Airport

Uber’s operation at the airport has been one of the contentions in Cancun.

Uber recently announced to their drivers in Cancun that they could start picking up and dropping off at the airport.

The problem is that taxi drivers disagree that it’s legal, the National Guard is preventing them from doing so, and the airport has posted signs indicating to passengers that it’s illegal.

Until these issues are resolved, a bus from the airport to the ADO station and then an Uber to your hotel are much better options.

I am an American permanent resident. I have always used the ADO shuttle in both directions. Normally it runs approximately every half hour from 0600 to 2300 hrs and goes to all the terminals. I purchase shuttle tickets at the airport kiosk. And then via the website i purchase an onward ticket. I thought the Tren Maya would be more convenient for long distance travel. For me it is unreliable and inconvenient. For the 17 years I have lived in MX ADO ATS and SUR have never been late.
