Uber Blocked From Cancun Airport By National Guard: Here Are 5 Alternatives

Last Updated

In many places where you might be on vacation, you can book an Uber upon arrival to get from the airport to your hotel, but this is not the case when visiting Cancun.

Although Uber notified its drivers that they could begin operating at the airport months ago, taxi drivers and authorities have not allowed it to happen.

The issue still hasn’t been resolved despite Uber drivers protesting against their treatment, and the National Guard is still blocking Uber from Cancun Airport.

So, here are five alternatives for getting from the airport to your hotel when visiting Cancun.

The ADO Bus Service

If you’re looking for the most affordable way to get from Cancun Airport to your hotel, then the ADO bus service is the way to go, but there’s a catch.

The ADO bus will only take you as far as their downtown station, so from there you’ll have to book an Uber or taxi to go the rest of the way.

The good news is, you can walk right out of Cancun Airport and buy a bus ticket for just a few dollars.

Semi-Private Transportation

Semi-private transportation is another pretty affordable way to go for getting to your hotel from Cancun Airport.

Semi-private transportation usually consists of vans or shuttles that take multiple people at once.

For this type of service, you can expect to pay around $30 each way.

Taxi

Taxis of course are an option for getting to your hotel in Cancun as well, and it’s actually one of the most used options, despite the high cost.

You can expect to pay upwards of $65 or more for a one-way trip in a taxi.

Not only that, you have to watch out for pirate taxis and taxi drivers that try to charge exorbitant rates.

The best way to do that is to check for a taxi registration number and negotiate the rate before getting into the taxi.

Hotel Transportation

You could get lucky, or be savvy when you’re booking your hotel, and book one that either provides transportation with your stay or will at least arrange it for you.

This not only takes away the hassle of doing it yourself but also the guessing game when it comes to price.

It’s also a safer option because the hotels are vetting the providers.

Private Transfer Service

A private transfer service isn’t the most affordable option, but it’s probably the most comfortable.

Typically, private transfer services will transport you in a suburban-type vehicle.

The added bonus of booking this type of service is that you book at a flat rate and drivers will typically make stops along the way if you need to.

To get from the airport to your hotel will cost at least around $100 though.

Booking Your Transportation In Advance

Whatever type of transportation you choose to use to get to your hotel when visiting Cancun, the best way to book it is in advance for two reasons.

One is that by booking in advance you’ll know ahead of time what you’ll be paying for the service, so no surprises.

The other reason is that your driver will be waiting for you upon arrival, so you can exit the airport and head straight for your hotel.

Uber In Cancun

While you can’t use Uber to get to or from the airport, Uber is otherwise available in Cancun.

It’s an inexpensive way to get around the city, but keep in mind that Uber drivers are dealing with ongoing animosity from taxi drivers.

For that reason, you may want to use one of these other options even for getting around when visiting Cancun.
