As instructed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the National Guard has stepped in to help protect the Riviera Maya after the recent shooting in Tulum which left two tourists dead and multiple others injured.
Last week on Wednesday, October 20th, 2021 tragedy struck Tulum when two tourists, Jennifer Henzold (35) and Anjali Ryot (25) were killed and three others were seriously injured after getting hit in the crossfire of a suspected gang-related shooting. This incident happened on the very popular ‘Centauro Sur Street’, in the area most commonly known as ‘La Mini Quinta’ while the visitors were dining at La Malquerida.
As a result of these horrendous acts of violence, the German Foreign Office quickly issued a travel advisory urging their citizens that “If you’re currently in the Tulum or the Playa del Carmen area, do not leave your secured hotel facilities.”
The President of Mexico, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has also spoken publicly in regards to the incident, grieving with the public while ensuring that those involved won’t get away with what they have done. One suspect has already been arrested, and others have allegedly been identified during the investigation that is underway.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has also called in the National Guard for back-up with protecting his tourists and citizens in Tulum and the whole Riviera Maya area.
Upwards of 250 national guards, army, and navy armed forces have been newly assigned spread throughout the Riviera Maya. With the focus of course in Tulum, but the intention is to increase the overall security presence. They have arrived and will be ready to roll out the rest of their new “cover everything” plans early next week. This brings the overall protective manpower in the area to nearly 450 people.
Many were shocked that something like this would even go down in such a high tourist area, typically local gangs and authorities want tourists to feel safe traveling to their home-land to spend money and boost their economy. The recent surge in acts of violence has made many potential property investors like U.S. tourist James Graham think twice about buying property in the area to rent out to fellow travelers.
The President and local authorities are committed to doing what it takes to lower the recent surge in crime rates and preserve Tulum’s reputation for being a safe and low-key place to travel in the Mexican Caribbean.
