New Route Flies Twice Weekly
American Airlines has officially begun its new route between Miami and Chetumal. The inaugural flight landed on Wednesday around 1 o’clock, with passengers welcomed off the aircraft with a guard of honor from airport representatives.
The new route is a welcome addition to the Mexican airport, which has had no direct international connection for several years. It’s also the only direct flight from the US into Southern Quintana Roo.
The flight will run twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Utilizing an Embraer 175 aircraft, the flight will have a maximum capacity of 76 passengers, with 64 in the main cabin and a further 12 in business class.
The move makes Chetumal the 28th destination in Mexico for American, which equates to around 750 flights per week to the country. However, it’s only the second route in the Quintana Roo region, where the rest of the flights are Cancun bound almost 250 miles further up the coast.
Speaking in an announcement, Jose Marisa Giraldo, who is the Director of Operations for Mexico, Central America, Colombia, and Ecuador for American Airlines, said “American has a commitment of almost 80 years of service in Mexico, and we’re proud to close this 2021 inaugural flight from Miami to Chetumal. We’re excited to be able to open the doors of Chetumal to more travelers from the United States and the World.”
The welcome ceremony for the flight was attended by the governor of the state, who also shared hope for the new project saying, “this pioneering flight in the state capital will benefit the entire southern region and expand its tourism offering, contributing to our goal of strengthening the economy and development of this region”.
The inaugural flight was only at around 50% capacity on arrival, but airline officials and locals are hopeful that the new route will enjoy a jump as the winter months roll in. The state capital offers a different side of Quintano Roo from Cancun, and despite a reported lack of marketing for the line, an increase in schedule and potentially other airlines moving in is the goal for Chetumal.
The local tourism board acknowledged that, as of right now, there are no promotional or marketing materials being leveraged for the route, but moving into 2022 that will change. The tourist board had announced this previously, attaching a lack of funding availability to the lack of promotional efforts. This was not just applicable to the flights but to the city as a whole.
The Association Of Hotels and Motels in the Southern region of Quintana Roo officially requested a sales program for the city, with emphasis on the name of Chetumal appearing around Miami to help push investment into the area.
The director of the tourism promotion council in Quintano Roo was quoted on the subject, saying “Related to this particular flight, there is no assigned amount and we have to see what the presence of what we are going to do in January is going to show us and the public relations actions are what we have to take, and we do it in collaboration, but there is no assigned expense or budget”.
