Cancun Sargassum Levels Drop In April Following Record-Breaking Year

Share The Article

If you are heading to Cancun this spring and nervously refreshing the beach webcams every five minutes looking for seaweed, you can finally relax!

After an absolutely chaotic, record-breaking year for sargassum in 2025, the Mexican Caribbean is currently enjoying some cleaner shores.

According to the latest from local authorities, the dreaded macroalgae is arriving at a mere fraction of what we saw last year.

That means it’s more likely that the iconic white sand and sparkling turquoise water get to be the undisputed stars of your vacation photos.

Here is a quick look at why the sargassum levels have plummeted this April and why your timing is absolutely perfect.

5 Things Travelers Wish The Knew Before Visiting Cancun In 2026

The Great April 2026 Plunge

The current numbers are the best kind of plot twist for tourists and local officials. So far this April, cleanup crews have only had to scoop up 136 tons of sargassum across all of Cancun.

To put that into perspective, March saw a super manageable 282 tons.

Because the seaweed volume dropped so drastically, the recent Holy Week (Semana Santa) holiday—aka one of the wildest, busiest travel weeks of the entire year—went off without a single hitch.

Antonio de la Torre Chambé, Cancun’s director of Public Services, noted that the beaches looked so good the city didn’t even need to call in extra backup crews to handle the daily sweep!

Mexican Navy Warns Sargassum Will Begin This Month What Travelers Can Expect

Bouncing Back From A Wild 2025

To fully appreciate how lucky you are right now, we have to look back at the jaw-dropping numbers from last year.

  • The 2024 Baseline: A totally normal, highly manageable 4,000 tons of seaweed collected all year.
  • The 2025 Shock: A massive, record-shattering 16,000 tons of sargassum crashed the party, entirely quadrupling the previous year’s total!

Most of that 2025 madness happened late in the season (August through October) when severe weather and hurricanes whipped the ocean into a frenzy, pushing massive waves of seaweed directly onto the coast.

Seeing the numbers chill out and drop back down to normal this spring is a massive victory for the local beach clubs.

Heavy Sargassum Reaches The Beaches Of Cancun In Early Arrival Real-Time Report

The City Is Still On High Alert

Even though the beaches are looking flawless right now, local authorities are definitely not taking a nap. Mayor Ana Paty Peralta has ordered permanent, eagle-eyed surveillance of the entire coastline.

The city is actively teaming up with the state and the Navy to figure out exactly what containment tricks worked best during last year’s invasion so they can instantly repeat them.

The goal is to keep heavy machinery and cleanup crews ready to pounce the very second the ocean currents try to pull a fast one.

If your bags are packed for a Cancun getaway this month, your timing is impeccable.

Thanks to incredible spring ocean conditions and non-stop proactive cleanup efforts, you are arriving exactly when you should to enjoy those famous Caribbean beaches in all their glory!

How To Still Have The Best Trip Ever (Even With Seaweed)

Mother Nature has a mind of her own, and if the ocean currents do decide to send a little sargassum your way during your trip, it absolutely does not mean your vacation is ruined!

The Riviera Maya is massive and bursting with incredible things to do that have zero connection to the shoreline. Here is how to effortlessly pivot your plans and still have the time of your life:

  • Escape To The Cenotes: Swap the saltwater for the jungle! The Yucatan Peninsula is famous for its thousands of cenotes—stunning, natural freshwater sinkholes that the ancient Mayans considered sacred. The water here is crystal clear, perfectly refreshing, and 100% seaweed-free.
  • Island Hop To The West: Sargassum almost exclusively hits east-facing shores. If you hop on a quick 20-minute passenger ferry over to Isla Mujeres (especially the world-famous Playa Norte) or explore the sheltered, western side of Cozumel, you will typically find spectacular, pristine blue water that the seaweed completely missed.
  • Maximize The Pool Magic: Remember that luxurious all-inclusive resort you booked? Now is the time to get every penny of your money’s worth! Claim a prime lounge chair, post up at the swim-up bar, and spend the afternoon ordering premium cocktails and enjoying the massive infinity pools without ever dealing with the sand.
  • Discover Ancient History: Use a murky beach day as the perfect excuse to cross a World Wonder off your bucket list! Book an inland day trip to explore the towering Mayan pyramids of Chichén Itzá, climb the ruins at Cobá, or wander through the vibrant, colorful colonial streets of nearby Valladolid.

A little seaweed is just a great excuse to explore a side of Mexico you might have otherwise missed!
