Nobody wants to get sick on vacation, but it happens. It is Day 3 of your trip, and you wake up with a killer sore throat or a suspect sinus infection. You know you probably need an antibiotic to save the rest of your week.
When you need medicine in Cancun, you have a few choices. If you want to do it safely and without spending a fortune, here is exactly how to handle it like a pro.

The Expensive Route: The Resort Doctor
Your first thought is probably just to call the front desk. Almost every big all-inclusive resort has a doctor on call. It is super convenient, but it is also going to cost you.
Having the resort doctor come to your room usually starts with a flat fee of $100 to $150 USD just for the visit. That does not even include the medicine, which they will sell to you at a huge markup. Unless you have great travel insurance that covers it, paying that much out of pocket for a basic antibiotic is a tough pill to swallow.

The Safe Route: Main Pharmacy Chains
If you want to get your medicine safely and pay normal local prices, you need to leave the resort and go to a real, verified Mexican pharmacy chain. These are the big national brands that follow strict health rules and get their medications directly from real distributors.
If you need a pharmacy, look for these trusted names:
- Farmacias del Ahorro
- Farmacias Guadalajara
- Farmacias Yza
- Farmacias Benavides
For example, there is a Farmacias Yza located right at Plaza Coral Negro in the heart of Punta Cancun, which is the main party and shopping center of the Hotel Zone. There are also Farmacias del Ahorro locations spread along the main tourist strip and over by Puerto Cancun. You are never too far from a real, corporate-backed pharmacy.

The $5 Doctor
A lot of people think you can just walk into a pharmacy in Mexico and buy antibiotics over the counter. You can’t. Mexico actually has strict rules about this, and you need a prescription. But the major pharmacy chains make it incredibly easy.
Places like Farmacias del Ahorro and Farmacias Benavides usually have a tiny medical clinic attached right to the side of the building. You just walk in and see a real, licensed doctor for a quick checkup. The visit usually costs under $5 USD (around 50 to 100 pesos), and there is barely ever a wait. The doctor will check your throat, write you a legal prescription, and you just walk next door to the register to buy your medicine for a few bucks.

Skip The Independent Pharmacies
While you are walking around Cancun, you will see a many independent, unnamed pharmacies with English signs advertising medicine.
These shops are very expensive and not as highly regulated as the chains. More importantly, the US State Department has an active warning about unregulated storefronts: “Pharmaceuticals: Counterfeit medication is common and may be ineffective or dangerous. Buy medication from reputable pharmacies.“ It is just not worth the risk of buying fake medicine or getting totally ripped off just to save a short taxi ride. Stick to the big chains.
Taking Medicine Back to the US
If you have leftover medicine when it is time to fly home, remember that US Customs and Border Protection takes this seriously. You cannot bring prescription drugs back into the United States without a valid prescription. If you used the $5 doctor, just make sure you keep the physical prescription paper they gave you so you don’t run into any issues at the border.
