If you are looking for a massive opportunity to grab a last-minute summer getaway, all eyes need to be on Cancun right now. Usually, booking a July or August trip to one of the most popular beach destinations on the planet means paying high prices. But this summer, everything has changed. Arrivals are dropping, resorts are shockingly empty, and prices are taking a dive. If you want a luxury vacation without the premium price tag, you have officially hit the booking sweet spot.

Why the sudden drop in crowds? You can blame the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament is completely taking over North America right now, and it is having a massive ripple effect on travel. There are two huge reasons why flights to Cancun are emptier than usual. First, travelers are actively staying home to avoid the high prices and general chaos associated with navigating airports during the massive sporting event. Second, airlines in the United States have completely rearranged their flight routes. Because they are prioritizing domestic flights to connect the various host cities across the US, the direct flow of everyday travelers heading down to Cancun has been seriously cut off.

The drop in tourists is not just speculation; the official numbers prove it. According to the Federal Tourism Secretariat (Sectur), the start of the summer season is seeing a severe slowdown. During the first few days of the tournament, hotel occupancy in Cancun reached only 56 percent. To put that in perspective, seeing Cancun resorts operating at barely over half capacity during the summer is incredibly rare. If you look a bit further south down the coast, places like the Costa Maya are doing even worse, logging a painfully weak 29.1 percent occupancy rate.

This slow start to the summer is actually part of a larger trend we are seeing this year. Even before the tournament kicked off, passenger traffic at Cancun International Airport was already declining from last year’s numbers. In May of 2025, the airport saw 1.46 million international arrivals. This year, May 2026 international arrivals dropped to 1.30 million. That is over 160,000 missing tourists in a single month, leaving a massive gap that the local tourism industry is desperate to fill.

People normally lock in their mid-summer trips months in advance. But because the World Cup effectively paralyzed normal booking habits, the inventory is just sitting there. Resorts that should be totally sold out are scrambling. While hoteliers and local tourism boards are incredibly disappointed by the low turnout, this is the absolute best news possible for your wallet.
Because these massive resorts are sitting half empty, they are forced to compete for the few travelers who are actually flying south. That means they are dropping their nightly rates and throwing out massive deals to get you to book. If you have been waiting to pull the trigger on a July or August vacation, you are in the perfect window to score a high-end all-inclusive resort for a fraction of the normal cost.

It is not just the hotel prices that are dropping. Since the airlines that still have routes heading to Cancun need to fill those planes, you can find surprisingly cheap last-minute airfare. And once you actually get there, the experience is going to be completely different from a standard summer trip. An occupancy rate of 56 percent means you get to enjoy the resort the way it was meant to be experienced. You will not have to wake up early to fight for a pool chair. You will not be waiting in long lines for a drink at the bar, and the staff will actually have the time to give you top-tier, personalized service.
You cannot wait forever to book this, though. Industry experts are fully expecting the crowds to bounce back. As the World Cup moves into its final stages and eventually wraps up, the expectation is that the Latin American market will rebound strongly. Cancun is still a massive international hub with flights pouring in from Europe, Canada, and South America. Once the soccer madness ends, those tourists are going to want a beach vacation, and the resorts will fill right back up.
