For years, arriving at Cancun International Airport meant bracing yourself for the infamous immigration hall. After a long flight, travelers were often met with snaking lines and wait times that could easily eat up the first hour or two of their Mexican Caribbean vacation.

However, thanks to the widespread implementation of automated passport control kiosks, those dreaded queues are largely becoming a thing of the past.

If you are heading to Cancun in 2026, here is everything you need to know about using the airport’s electronic gates to breeze through customs in minutes.

What Are the Cancun Airport E-Gates?

Officially known by Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM) as Automated Migration Filters (AMF), these e-gates are self-service barriers that use advanced biometric technology to verify your identity.

Instead of waiting in a traditional line to speak face-to-face with an immigration officer and answer questions about your trip, you simply scan your passport and look into a camera. The automated system directly compares the facial features of the traveler with the encrypted biometric information stored in the passport’s microchip.

The entire automated process takes an average of just a few seconds, drastically reducing the bottleneck at passport control and getting travelers out into the sunshine faster than ever before.

Who is Eligible to Use the E-Gates?

While the kiosks are incredibly efficient, they are not available to everyone. To skip the traditional line and use the Fast Track kiosks, you must meet a specific set of strict requirements:

• Age Limit: You must be at least 18 years old. Minors cannot use the machines for safety and operational reasons, meaning families traveling with children must stick together and use the regular staffed immigration lines.
• Passport Type: You must hold a valid electronic passport (e-passport) that features the standard biometric chip symbol on the front cover.
• Validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 180 days from your date of entry into Mexico.
• Nationality: You must be a citizen of an eligible country. Currently, this includes the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and several European nations such as France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands.
• Purpose of Visit: The e-gates are exclusively designed for tourists. If you are entering Mexico for work, study, family reunification, or on a residency visa, you are legally required to process your entry with a human officer.

How to Use the Kiosks (Step-by-Step)

When you deplane and enter the immigration hall, look for the signs directing eligible travelers to the automated gates, which are typically located to the far left of the traditional queues.

To ensure the line keeps moving quickly, have your documents ready and follow these steps:

1. Prepare your passport: Take your passport completely out of any protective cover or wallet, and open it directly to the photo page.
2. Clear your face: Remove any sunglasses, hats, headphones, or face masks. Put your mobile phone away immediately, as taking photos in the immigration hall is strictly prohibited and can cause delays.
3. Scan the document: Place the photo page of your passport face down on the machine’s glass scanner.
4. Facial Recognition: Once the scanner successfully reads your passport’s chip, the first set of glass doors will open. Step inside the enclosure and look directly at the camera on the screen for your facial verification.
5. Collect your ticket: After the system validates your identity and flight information, the exit doors will open, and the machine will print a small white ticket containing a QR code.

Note: If the system cannot verify your identity or malfunctions, the gate will remain closed, and an immigration officer will step in to process you manually.

The New Digital Tourist Card

In the past, visitors had to fill out a paper Multiple Migration Form (FMM)—often handed out by flight attendants on the plane with a pen—and keep the bottom half tucked inside their passport until their departure flight.

The e-gates have entirely replaced this outdated paper system with a digital entry record. The white ticket that pops out of the e-gate is incredibly important, as it contains a unique QR code and a digital seal.

You must scan this QR code with your smartphone to download your Digital Multiple Migration Form (Digital FMM). It is highly recommended that you keep both the printed ticket safely inside your passport and the downloaded digital file readily available on your phone, as airline agents or immigration officers may request to see them when you are departing the country.

While the new e-gates have made getting officially stamped into Mexico a breeze, travelers should still manage their overall time expectations. Baggage claim has recently become the primary bottleneck at the airport, meaning you might still experience a wait for your checked luggage. However, thanks to the automated gates, you will at least be waiting by the carousel instead of standing in an endless immigration line.
