If you have ever landed at Cancun International Airport, waited an hour for your checked bags, battled through the terminal crowds, and then endured a grueling two-hour van ride down Highway 307 just to reach your boutique hotel in Tulum, you know the struggle. That long, exhausting transit day has historically been the mandatory rite of passage for anyone heading to the southern stretches of the Riviera Maya.

That dynamic is continuing to shift in a massive way. As the region gears up for the peak 2026–2027 winter travel corridor, Tulum International Airport is locking in an aggressive slate of brand-new and expanding non-stop international routes. Mexico’s Ministry of Tourism has officially confirmed five key route expansions connecting the jungle airport directly to top hubs across North America, including major Canadian gateways and the greater New York metropolitan area.

With major carriers like Air Canada, Air Transat, WestJet, and United Airlines significantly boosting their seasonal flight frequencies, travelers heading to the southern Mexican Caribbean have more seamless options than ever to bypass Cancun entirely and land right at Tulum’s doorstep.

The New Canadian Influx

The biggest winner in this latest route expansion is undoubtedly the Canadian travel market.

Escaping the brutal northern winter has always sent hordes of Canadians down to the Caribbean, but reaching destinations like Akumal, Tulum, and Bacalar often meant booking cumbersome itineraries into Cancun and spending half a vacation day in a transit shuttle.

This winter, Canadian carriers are going all-in on direct access to Tulum with a flurry of weekly non-stop flights spanning eastern and western Canada:

• Montreal: Travelers flying out of Montreal will have two distinct airline choices. Air Canada is launching non-stop service starting October 29, operating once a week on Thursdays through April 8. Competing on the same corridor, leisure carrier Air Transat will run weekly Sunday departures beginning October 25 and stretching through April 18.
• Toronto: As Canada’s largest departure hub, Toronto is receiving a major injection of weekly seat capacity. Air Canada will run a direct Sunday service starting October 25 through April 11. Meanwhile, WestJet is doubling down on the route, operating twice-weekly non-stop flights on Thursdays and Saturdays from October 31 through April 24.
• Calgary: Western Canada is getting direct, hassle-free access to the southern Riviera Maya without the need to connect through Vancouver or Toronto. WestJet will launch direct flights from Calgary starting October 29, running twice weekly on Thursdays and Saturdays throughout the winter season.
• Quebec City: Regional travelers in Quebec will not need to trek to Montreal to catch a flight south. Air Transat is introducing direct non-stop service from Quebec City straight into Tulum, operating once weekly on Sundays starting October 25.

United Connects The New York Metro Area

While Canadian carriers are dominating the volume of new route announcements, American travelers from the Northeast are also scoring an important direct link ahead of the holidays.

United Airlines has officially slated non-stop service connecting Newark Liberty International Airport directly to Tulum. Operating between December 17 and January 24, the route will run twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays. Perfectly timed for peak holiday getaways, this corridor offers millions of travelers across the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut tri-state area a straight shot into Tulum without having to deal with the terminal congestion in Cancun.

According to Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, expanding this international flight network is the cornerstone of a broader federal strategy to make the destination more accessible, boost local mobility, and spread economic prosperity deeper into southern Quintana Roo communities.

Tulum Airport vs. Cancun Airport: How To Choose

While having direct access to Tulum is a massive upgrade, booking flights into the new airport requires a bit of practical travel calculation. Before you lock in your itinerary, weigh these real-world factors:

• Your Final Destination Matters: If you are staying in Tulum, Akumal, Chemuyil, or venturing further south toward the pristine waters of Bacalar, landing at Tulum International is an absolute game-changer that saves you hours on the highway. However, if your resort is located in Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, or the Cancun Hotel Zone, booking into Cancun Airport remains significantly faster and cheaper.
• Ground Transportation Costs: Because Tulum Airport sits deep in the jungle roughly 25 miles southwest of downtown Tulum, local airport taxi pricing can be steep. Unlike Cancun, where intense competition keeps private shuttle rates relatively competitive, Tulum’s ground transit market is still developing. Always pre-book a private van transfer or plan your route on the Maya Train before you take off to avoid hefty curb-side taxi rates.
• Flight Frequency and Pricing: Cancun still operates dozens of daily flights from virtually every major city, creating heavy downward pressure on ticket prices.
