If you are based in Western Canada and looking for other options other than Westjet to get your all-inclusive Cancun fix, we have excellent news. Air Canada has officially announced that it is resuming nonstop service from Calgary (YYC) to Cancun (CUN), putting the carrier back in direct competition for the “oil money to beach bunny” pipeline.

The announcement dropped late this week as part of Air Canada’s strategic Winter 2026-27 expansion, and it marks a significant shift in the airline’s battle for the Western market. For the past few seasons, WestJet has largely dominated the nonstop sun routes from Alberta, but Air Canada is stepping back into the ring.
Here is the operational breakdown of the new route and what you need to know before you book.

The Route: Calgary (YYC) to Cancun (CUN)
Starting December 11, 2026, Air Canada will begin operating four flights per week between Calgary International Airport and Cancun. This isn’t a “test run” with a single Saturday flight; they are committing to a robust schedule that covers the prime long-weekend travel days.
The Schedule:
- Frequency: 4x Weekly
- Days of Operation: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday
- Departure (YYC): 08:30 AM (Arriving CUN at 3:50 PM)
- Return (CUN): 4:50 PM (Arriving YYC at 9:00 PM)

Why This Schedule Matters: From a traveler’s perspective, these times are solid. The 8:30 AM departure allows you to land in Cancun with enough daylight to check in and hit the pool. The return flight is even better—a 4:50 PM departure means you get a full final beach day without the stress of a crack-of-dawn checkout.

The Aircraft: What You Are Flying On
Air Canada is deploying its Air Canada Rouge fleet for this route, specifically utilizing the Boeing 737 MAX.
Now, before you roll your eyes at the word “Rouge,” remember that the MAX fleet is significantly more modern than the old Airbus A319s that used to plague these routes. You can expect:
- Two Cabins: Premium Rouge (recliner seats, blocked middle) and Economy.
- Wi-Fi: Fast, streaming-quality Wi-Fi is available (free for Aeroplan members, which is a huge perk if you need to work).
- Entertainment: No seatback screens in Economy, so bring your iPad. You’ll stream content directly to your device.

The “Turf War” for Western Canada
This move is about more than just adding a few flights; it’s a strategic counter-attack. Calgary is historically WestJet’s fortress hub. By bringing nonstop Cancun service back to YYC, Air Canada is trying to claw back the loyalty of Albertan sun-seekers who have been forced to fly “Team Teal” for direct access.
For you, the traveler, this is excellent news. Competition breeds better pricing. With two major carriers now fighting for the YYC-CUN route, we should expect to see aggressive seat sales heading into the fall booking window.
Our Take: A Win for Efficiency
Let’s face it—connecting through Toronto (YYZ) or Montreal (YUL) to get to Mexico from Calgary is a nightmare. It turns a 6-hour travel day into a 12-hour marathon, often involving de-icing delays in Eastern Canada.
4x Weekly (Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun). The 8:30 AM departure is perfect for maximizing your first beach day.
No. It’s the modern Boeing 737 MAX fleet. Expect fast Wi-Fi and updated interiors, though you’ll still need to stream entertainment to your own device.
Yes. Air Canada is challenging WestJet’s monopoly on this route. Expect aggressive seat sales for Winter 2026/27 as they fight for passengers.
Service officially kicks off December 11, 2026. Flights are already loaded in the system for booking.
The return of this route cuts the friction. You get on the plane in the snow, you get off in the humidity, and you don’t have to worry about missing a connection because of a blizzard in Ontario.
Booking Intel: These flights have just been loaded into the system for the Winter 2026/2027 season. If you are the type of traveler who plans way ahead (or wants to snag those lie-flat reward seats on other routes), now is the time to start looking.
Calgary is back on the map, and the race to the beach just got a lot faster.

I believe the 737 max will have all of their seat with seatback entertainment. Please refer to ACs website.
