Cancun Airport Shuts Down Several Visitax Kiosks After Outcry Over Inflated Tourist Fees

Share The Article

If there is one thing that can instantly ruin the vibe of a tropical vacation, it is the feeling that you are being price-gouged the moment you step off the plane.

For the past several weeks, international travelers arriving at Cancun International Airport have been taking to social media in droves to voice their absolute frustration over Quintana Roo’s mandatory Visitax. But the outrage hasn’t been about the existence of the tax itself—it has been entirely focused on physical airport kiosks allegedly slapping inflated fees on top of the legally mandated state charge.

The digital backlash grew so intense that the state government is now stepping in. In a move to protect the region’s world-class hospitality reputation, local authorities have launched a coordinated crackdown, shutting down questionable kiosks and overhauling how the tourist fee is collected.

Here is everything you need to know about the Visitax controversy, what the government is doing to fix it, and how you can avoid paying a single extra penny on your next trip.

The Outcry Over Inflated Kiosk Fees

The Visitax was implemented a few years ago by the state of Quintana Roo to generate necessary revenue for local infrastructure, security, and tourism services. It is a legitimate, required fee for international visitors.

However, a massive point of friction emerged recently when physical payment kiosks operating inside the airport terminals began acting as middlemen. Exhausted tourists, anxious about clearing security or boarding their flights home, were cornered at these stations and charged the standard state tax plus a variety of alleged “convenience,” “processing,” or inflated exchange rate fees.

Travelers quickly realized they were paying significantly more than the official government rate. Frustrated visitors pulled out their phones, and platforms like TikTok and Twitter were immediately flooded with viral videos and complaints from tourists feeling financially ambushed at the airport.

The Government Intervenes

The social media outrage forced the highest levels of the Quintana Roo government to take action. This week, the Quintana Roo Tourism Secretariat (Sedetur), working in direct coordination with the Finance and Planning Secretariat (Sefiplan), announced a review of the entire Visitax collection process.

State Secretary of Tourism Bernardo Cueto Riestra confirmed that his agency is actively executing strategies to address the digital backlash. Interestingly, Cueto Riestra pointed out that the government had not actually received formal, direct complaints from tourists through their official administrative channels. Instead, the viral social media posts served as the primary catalyst for the crackdown.

By shutting down problematic kiosks and reviewing the operational guidelines, Cueto Riestra emphasized that the state’s absolute priority is guaranteeing a positive experience for visitors, ensuring that the collection of resources directly benefits the tourism sector without exploiting the tourists themselves.

The Crackdown Expands to Tulum

Cancun isn’t the only airport under the state’s microscope. With the brand-new Tulum International Airport now processing a massive influx of international passengers, officials are highly motivated to ensure these inflated fee tactics do not migrate south into the jungle.

Cueto Riestra confirmed that the state is actively auditing the tax application process at the Tulum air terminal. By reviewing the situation on the ground at the new facility, the government plans to implement strict, standardized collection protocols across all points of entry in the Mexican Caribbean.

What This Means For Your Winter Vacation

While the state government works to clean up the physical collection methods, the tax itself is here to stay. Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa recently addressed the controversy, confirming that her administration is fully committed to ensuring the Visitax collection is carried out in a strictly orderly manner moving forward.

Governor Lezama clarified that the Visitax is a permanent fixture and will definitively continue to be collected at the Cancun International Airport. However, she stressed that the Mexican Caribbean remains an incredibly attractive destination, with incoming flights experiencing massive demand and airlines rolling out new routes for the winter season.

Yes, VISITAX Is Mandatory For Travelers Visiting Cancun Don't Risk Skipping It

If you are flying into Cancun or Tulum this season, the best way to handle the Visitax is to completely bypass the airport kiosks. Skip the lines and the risk of hidden fees by paying the tax online through the official state government portal before you even leave for the airport. Once paid, simply save the digital QR code receipt to your phone. If you are asked for proof of payment in the terminal, you can confidently flash your screen and walk right to your gate.

When a family of 6 has to pay the vista tax and they are on a budget its not a small amount for them. Its still leaves a bitter taste in your mouth when your leaving having to pay for a tax, especially after having a great vacation and getting hit up for more money when you are trying to leave to go home.
