I spend a lot of time passing through the Cancun International Airport, and if you have flown down here recently, you know it can get pretty hectic. We all love the Mexican Caribbean, but the crowds and the ongoing construction can definitely test your patience. The good news? That temporary construction dust is going to be totally worth it.

The airport is currently in the middle of a massive expansion. Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) is pouring 8 billion pesos—which translates to roughly $400 million—into upgrading all four terminals and the internal roadways. This massive infrastructure project is rolling out over a three-year timeframe to comfortably handle the incredible demand this destination sees year after year.

But while the long-term growth plan is moving full steam ahead, the airport actually experienced a surprising dip in international travelers over the last few months.

Here is a simple breakdown of what is happening at the airport right now, why the crowds were a little lighter this summer, and what you can easily expect if you are flying down for a winter getaway.

A Slower Summer, But Huge Numbers Overall

Even with a slightly slower summer season, Cancun International Airport is still moving an incredible amount of people. According to Carlos Trueba Coll, the airport’s director, the facility is projected to close out 2026 with roughly 28.5 million total passengers.

While 28.5 million is a huge number, it is still a bit short of the all-time record ASUR set back in 2024, when over 30.4 million passengers traveled through the terminals.

So, where did the dip come from? The international travel segment took a noticeable hit over the summer months. In August, international traffic dropped by 15%. This followed a trend we saw all summer long, with May, June, and July all seeing double-digit drops in international arrivals (11.1%, 13.1%, and 12.7% respectively). August officially marked the fourth consecutive month of negative double-digit trends for foreign passengers.

Trueba Coll explained that this drop is not because people are losing interest in Cancun. Instead, it comes down to major airline shifts. A combination of airlines leaving the market, carriers rearranging their flight routes, and the rising cost of jet fuel all played a major part in the summer slowdown.

The $400 Million Master Plan

Despite the recent dip in foreign arrivals, the long-term vision for Cancun remains massive. You simply do not pause progress when you are the top beach destination in Latin America.

To make sure the airport is ready for the future, ASUR is actively pushing forward with its massive 8-billion-peso investment. This three-year project is focused on significantly improving the infrastructure across all four terminals. It also includes major work on the internal roads to fix the frustrating traffic bottlenecks that pop up during the peak holiday rushes.

As the weather cools down up north, seasonal flight routes are officially reactivating from the United States, Canada, and Europe. To help boost these numbers even further, airport officials believe the solution lies in working with the local hotel sector on joint promotional campaigns to recover flight frequencies and bring more travelers back to the beach.

Simple Tips For Flying Into Cancun This Season

With so much moving and shaking happening at the airport, it pays to be prepared. If you want to keep your travel day completely stress-free, here are a few simple tips I always swear by:

• Pad Your Travel Time: Because ASUR is actively working on internal roads and terminal facilities, you might run into some temporary detours. Always plan to arrive at the airport a little earlier than usual for your flight home.
• Double-Check Your Terminal: With four terminals undergoing construction changes, airline assignments can occasionally shift. Check your airline app before you leave your resort to ensure your driver drops you off at the right door.
• Skip the Taxis, Pre-Book a Ride: The easiest way to bypass the curbside chaos is to have a private shuttle waiting for you. It takes all the guesswork out of leaving the airport so you can start your vacation immediately.
