Cold Also Stretches To Quintana Roo Beaches
The massive winter storm that has been pummeling the Northeast USA has left Cancun International Airport with nearly 100 delays. Those still in Cancun are also feeling a disappointing drop in temperature as they try to enjoy their last days in the resort town.
The weekend saw a massive bombogenesis weather front that caused havoc across the Northeast of the United States. When warm sea air met a freezing arctic front, the pressure dropped drastically, plunging many regions into a thick blanket of snow and ice.
Mass cancellations ensued across the US, and now, Cancun is feeling the ramifications as thousands of passengers attempt to get home. Many of the flights bound for the Northeast were completely canceled over the weekend, and as of 10 AM on Monday, over 100 flights are currently delayed at the airport.
Outlets are reporting hundreds of passengers waiting around the terminal dressed in winter clothed in preparation for their return North. Many of the delays are feared to turn into full cancellations. Por Esto reported as many as 64 cancellations on Monday, but it is unclear as to where those figures emerged from. Most flight tickers online are showing only a handful of full terminations of flights.
To compound the problems, Airmexico was forced to cancel two flights due to its ongoing staff shortage problems. The airline is still struggling with positive COVID cases amongst pilots and other flight staff, leaving many airports scrambling to get planes fully manned and in the air.
Although many of the flights are bound for the Northeast, plenty are the victims of ripple effect delays. Destinations such as Miami, Dallas, and Fort Lauderdale are also seeing delays from some of the major American lines. This is most likely due to the arrival times at transiting airports being severely hampered.
Passengers are being told to get in touch with their airlines directly for more information as many of the issues are beyond the assistance of the airport itself. The delays are anticipated to continue well into the end of the day, and possibly tomorrow.
Those still in Cancun have been feeling the storm in a different way. Temperatures dropped once again in Quintana Roo over the weekend, with only bursts of warmth scattered throughout the past few days. Monday appears to be similar with cooler temperatures and some gusty winds putting a dampener on many tourists’ vacations.
Many choose the winter months to escape the cold conditions up north, but January has seen several days much cooler than is reasonably expected. The weather has left many beaches near empty, and some local vendors feel the pinch financially.
Many have complained that the weather, combined with the current restrictions, is hampering their business. With little else to do, those who are in Cancun are sticking to the comfort of their hotels in these instances, leaving independent vendors literally out in the cold.
The weather has caused drastic issues across North America this January, at a time when the travel industry was hoping to get back on its feet. Combined with COVID infection rates, new restrictions, and mass cancellations, 2022 has been a constant hurdle for many.
The possibility of a red traffic light designation is still looming and, although it will not be as severe as many fear, another drop in capacity or tourist numbers will be a justified worry for many who make a living from the thousands of tourists passing through.
Those in the US trying to get to Cancun who have had flights canceled or delayed should contact their airline for rebooking advice. Many of the airlines have policies in place to minimize any financial loss in this case.
