Recovering Markets And High Demand Runs Risk Of Hotels Being Full
Cancun could run the risk of being completely full over the week of Easter. Current projections mean all hotel rooms could be used by visiting tourists.
Cancun is currently sitting with over 85% of its hotels booked for the typically busy period. There is an expected 3 million visitors expected to pass through the area over the coming weeks and a possible 200 thousand per day during the week of Easter itself.
The demographic is looking to be an extremely international one this time. The US usually makes up the vast majority of the bookings in Cancun, but as Europeans and other countries generally receive more time off than their American counterparts, transatlantic trips are set to be the dominant group this time. The Ukrainian conflict, as unfortunate as it is, is having some positive impacts on Cancun’s tourist industry. The potential instability of flights in Europe means that many are choosing to head in the opposite direction.
Local hotel associations are expecting South Americans to make up a considerable amount of the late numbers too. The head of one such council said “Although some markets such as Colombia, Chile, Argentina, prevail in the season, more national tourism will arrive for these dates, and they are expected to have good figures.”
With so much of the world off of work for at least the long weekend, and often a week in Europe, there is high demand for a beach getaway. In light of the past two years, there is an even stronger, pent-up urge to get away on a restriction-free trip. Many of the tourists will not have been able to travel at all for significant periods, and the majority of them have spent at least some portion of the last two years confined to their homes.
Although the rest of the world is now beginning to open up, Mexico as a whole has been ahead of the restriction curve. The country never brought in any entry restrictions, making it the easiest nation in the world to visit during the pandemic. Its accessibility drew massive amounts of new tourists to the region, propelling Cancun to one of the most popular destinations in the world.
With so much business flooding into the area over the coming period, travelers should keep on top of their itineraries. Expect beaches to be packed, restaurants to be full, and activity groups to fill up fast. To avoid any disappointment, visitors should get in touch with any restaurants or tours that they are interested in. Making reservations is the key in these cases. Although many enjoy not having a set plan on vacation, when sharing with hundreds of thousands of other customers, it’s always best to guarantee a spot.
The government and local businesses are deep into the process of preparing for the major arrivals. Sargassum deposits are already a huge worry for the region after high levels have already been left on Playa del Carmen and Tulum beaches. The Navy is currently placing barriers to help stop as much seaweed as possible from hitting the shoreline, but some can still be expected.
Travelers should also anticipate seeing armed national guard units patrolling the beaches in Quintana Roo. They are part of the Tourist Security Battalion, a specialize unit there to prevent any escalations in violence by local organized crime groups.
The government has also put several new initiatives in place to help secure the region as much as possible. Several high-profile incidents in the past few months have drawn major security concerns, but statistically speaking tourists are very safe.
Visitors can also enjoy a mask-free time in public places in Quintana Roo. Although they still must be worn on public transport.
