Hold on to your hats, as it looks like Cancun might just be setting even more new records this year. Not content with breaking traveler records for 2022 — a year that saw a staggering 30 million travelers make their way to the city and the wider region — this year, it’s expected that the total number of Canadian visitors heading to the city will double, as Cancun looks to further cement its position as one of the hottest destinations on the entire planet at present.
Easily accessible both by air travel and on cruises, and with good weather and good times all but guaranteed, Cancun is a safe bet for travelers looking to catch a spot of winter sun without having to travel too far to get it. Offered the choice between a Canadian winter or a Cancun heatwave, it’s not difficult to see why Canadian visitor numbers are expected to skyrocket. As even more travelers look towards visiting Cancun over the next few months, here’s a look at what has made the popularity of the world’s most in-demand destination so irresistible and enduring to millions of travelers.
Canadian Visitors To Double – Information For Travelers
Last year was the best year on record for Cancun as a tourism destination. The year ended with some 30 million travelers visiting the city, with a sizable portion of that figure coming from North America. This year, early signs are indicating that it could be yet another good year for the Mexican Caribbean as the region’s sky-high popularity has extended into the early months of 2023 — and it’s looking like it will be a particularly popular destination for travelers coming from Canada.

Speaking this week, Quintana Roo’s Secretary of State for Tourism, Bernardo Cueto Riestra, stated that he the total number of Canadians visiting the region this summer would double as reservations already exceeded 2019 figures by 200%. In order to achieve this figure, Riestra added that they would be looking to promote specific sections of the region’s tourism offerings, including medical, sports, cultural, and ecological tourism, to match the promotion of the region as a gastronomic destination.
Cancun is synonymous with many travelers as being a top destination for foodies. From roadside taquerias to the pinnacle of fine dining, it caters to all crowds and palettes — and by leaning on its high-quality medical tourism options, cultural spots, and a large range of eco-tours to attract Canadian travelers further, it won’t be long before its tourism records are shattered once more.
A key factor behind the growing popularity of Cancun for Canadian travelers is the ease of access. The destination is extremely well served by a range of airlines throughout Canada, making it easier for travelers to find affordable and flexible flights to the city. Just last week, the ultra-low-cost carrier Canada Jetlines became the seventh Canadian airline to offer routes to Cancun, joining the likes of Sunwing Airlines, Air Canada, Flair Airlines, Air Transat, Swoop, and WestJet in the process.
However, flights are only one avenue into the Mexican Caribbean. Last year, cruise travel into the region exploded, with the stunning island of Cozumel welcoming more than 3 million cruise guests into its ports — and that number could rise even further still. Speaking about what the future holds for tourism in the region over the coming year, Riestra added that cruise travel is expected to fully recover this year whilst also having the potential to grow even further — with a significant proportion of cruisegoers expected to be Canadian.
With its wide range of high-quality resorts, awe-inspiring historical sites, unbeatable nightlife, and its outstanding natural features, Cancun looks like it’s well on course to set new records once again this year, regardless of where the guests are coming from. Plus, with sargassum levels expected to be lower than they were last year, the city’s beaches are expected to be as pristine, packed, and inviting as they’ve ever been, making it truly the place to be this year.

Just flew from Cancun to London Canada and got scammed at the airport. My BD Transportation driver delivered a van of guests to the airport on Feb 8. We were not asked which airline or terminal we needed. It was not our terminal and immediately a man in a taxi shirt, red and black, offered to help. He said it was a 45 minute walk but he could get us a ride. He charged 60US up front!,, then the van driver complained to us that he wasn’t being paid and wanted a big tip! We see this as a scam starting with the BD driver. Guests to Cancun airport do not need to leave Mexico having just been scammed!
