There’s been a bunch of travel portals citing the popularity of Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean for this upcoming summer travel period.
However, few have looked at the actual cost of flying to a getaway as a major factor in the ranking criteria.
Kayak has some good news to share for those looking for enjoy the sun, sand and surf of Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean for an upcoming summer international adventure.
Top Budget Beach Destination
When it comes to international beach destinations, Cancun came out on top for budget-focused trips during the upcoming busy summer getaway vacation period based on cost of airfare.
According to the research conducted by Kayak, the average price of a flight to Cancun between May 24 and September 3 was only $486 at the time of their survey.
Cancun was followed by popular beach hotspots, such as Nassau in the Bahamas and Puerto Vallarta, for other cheap beach flight destinations.
To be clear, this only considers airfare. The total cost of your vacation can vary a lot based on the accommodations and activities you choose.
It’s Eurotrip Summer
Despite the low price of airfares this summer travel season, Cancun was only ranked No. 8 in the top ten traveler searched summer destinations for a vacation getaway this year.
Americans are a looking to go a little bit more abroad this year, according to the analysis of tourist searches on the popular travel portal for this summer.
The top three locations were all in Europe for this summer – London, Rome and Paris. In fact, Cancun was the only top ten location outside of Europe and Asia.
“For those whose budgets might not want you to drop an average $1000+ on airfare, Cancún is a solid alternative. Your passport gets some action, and you may not feel the same pinch in your wallet,” wrote the travel editors of Kayak in their report about the top ten summer travel international destinations.
Cancun was also recognized as a great place for car rentals in the Kayak report with an average daily rate of only $41 per day. It was second to San Jose, Costa Rica with a daily rate of $33 per day.
Flight Price Drop Not a Surprise
The drop in airfares should not come as a surprise of regular Cancun Sun readers.
We have been discussing in our articles that there was a good chance that fares would drop due to the airlines increase flight frequency and competition from the opening of the new Tulum International Airport to international flights from the United States.
This is expected to continue throughout the summer, meaning that Cancun will be a good budget destination for travelers looking for a non-budget-busting vacation getaway for the summer.
What Travelers Need to Know
While the Kayak news about Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean being a good value international travel destination this year from an airfare level, the news is not as positive when it comes to hotel rooms.
Demand for hotel rooms in Cancun remains strong for the May 24 to September 3 travel period as a summer slow season does not appear to be in the books for this year.
Because of this, travelers are urged to reserve their hotel room or vacation rental property well in advance of their planned travel date.
Cancellable room rates are recommended due to the possibility of lower room rates later in the season, along with a dire warning about a historically more active tropical weather season in the Atlantic and Caribbean regions.
Tourists can also choose a cheaper, nonrefundable hotel or vacation rental room rate instead. However, it is recommended that travel insurance be purchased to protect the amount paid in advance in the event of a tropical weather impact during a planned vacation getaway.
