New Survey Places Cancun As Most Expensive City Outside of the U.S. To Ring in the New Year.

A new study has listed Cancun as one of the most expensive cities in the world to celebrate the New Year.

The survey, compiled by cheaphotels.org, compared hotel prices from fifty major cities across the world to generate the rankings.

As can be expected, this year’s list saw some drastic flips in the rankings, with some notable tourist powerhouses falling way down in the pecking order.

Cancun was listed as the sixth most expensive in the world, making it the priciest option outside of the United States. The Mexican tourist hub was sandwiched between Honolulu one spot above, and Las Vegas one below. Miami Beach topped the list with.

Cheap Hotels searched the fifty cities using the hotel companion website Kayak, and focussed solely on hotels with a 3 star rating or above. The hotels must also have been centrally located in their city. The numbers were taken in mid-December and show the cheapest double room available in the vicinity over the period of December 30th to January 2nd.

The cheapest room available in Cancun, according to the survey, was $228. For comparison, the cheapest room in Miami was $365. London (13th), had a cheapest rate of $151, while Tokyo (38th) had a cheapest rate of just $55.

The list is reflective of another turbulent year for tourism, in which Cancun has emerged with aplomb as a dominant force in the global industry. Other lists have seen the beach side resort city sky rocket up popularity rankings as travelers are drawn by the allure of restriction free Caribbean getaways.

New year’s Eve is typically a hugely important night for the travel sector. Some cities, like Sydney, New York City, Edinburgh, and Dubai are iconic locations to enjoy the countdown, but COVID has left many of them facing a massive drop in tourists, regardless of borders being open.

Cancun has capitalized in the gap in the market, and tourists are swarming in their millions to the Mexican sun. Just last week, the Cancun International airport broke its own daily operations records five times. Airline carriers across the world have been adding Cancun to their itinerary lists, and sometimes doubling previous route numbers to the region.

The emergence of Omicron has done little to hamper Cancun’s success, and may have even helped. As much fo Europe scrambles new restrictions and closures, Mexico remains open to everyone, regardless of vaccination status or a lack of tests.

The Quintana Roo governor has asked locals and tourists alike to give heed to the basic sanitary protocols being recommended to help keep the infection rate lower. A significant increase in rates could see the region regress to a “yellow traffic light” designation, which would mean hotels and restaurants could not function at full capacity. With 100% capacity for many of the resorts and hotels in Cancun a serious possibility over the winter season, a sudden change could spell disaster for the local industry.
