Cancun is officially the top international destination for American travelers looking to get away on a vacation this Spring.
According to travel gurus TripAdvisor, Cancun – which has been breaking its own traveler number-related records left, right, and center over the past few months – has proven itself to be the number one spot for American travelers yet again, beating off other top-quality international destinations such as Paris, London and other Mexican rivals in the process as it looks to solidify its status as the world’s hottest destination right now.
The news is hardly likely to come as a surprise to anyone, with rooms selling out, flights to Cancun bordering on full and popular holidays such as Spring Break just around the corner. Here’s a look at how Cancun has proven to be the top destination for American travelers this Spring, plus a look at what else the findings revealed about travel in the coming months.
Cancun The Place To Be – Information For Travelers
As far as travel is concerned, 2022 was the perfect year for Cancun and the wider Mexican Caribbean region. A record number of travelers visited the city last year, with more than 30 million taking in the glory of the sun, sand, and sights that Cancun has to offer, making it one of the most in-demand destinations in the world.
On top of air arrivals, the city also benefitted from huge numbers of domestic travelers and cruise ship passengers as well, with everyone keen to get in on the action across the peninsula.

And while we may only be into the third month of 2023, it’s clear that the appetite for travel to Cancun hasn’t quite gone away just yet – and, if it was even possible, it has grown even higher. That’s because the destination has just emerged as the top international destination for American travelers over the next few months, according to travel industry giants TripAdvisor in their recent seasonal travel index.
TripAdvisor collected data via their Tripadvisor Consumer Sentiment Survey. The survey was completed by 2,100 travelers between the dates of January 8 and January 20, with respondents hailing from five countries – U.S., UK, Australia, Singapore, and Japan.
Coupled with the behavioral data of travelers from these five countries, TripAdvisor was able to formulate a list of the most popular destinations for between March 1 and May 31 – a list that saw Cancun reign once more among American travelers.
The results show that American travelers are keen to get some much-needed sun over the coming months. While Cancun was in 1st place, similarly sunny destinations Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and Cabo San Lucas in Mexico were in second and third place, respectively. Behind these were the traditional international vacation hot spots such as Paris and London, while fellow Mexican destinations Puerto Vallarta and Playa Del Carmen also found their way into the top 10.
Encouragingly for Cancun, it also proved to be a hit in a global context. When taking into account the overall findings from all nationalities, Cancun emerged as the second most popular destination in the world, behind Paris in first place and ahead of London in third.
While Cancun has always been popular with travelers from North America, it is also becoming increasingly popular with travelers from further afield, following the region becoming one of the first beach destinations to drop restrictions during the pandemic.
TripAdvisor’s findings also found other insights into travel over the coming few months that travelers should keep in mind. It showed that the most popular date for travel for Americans was March 11, and also revealed that the busiest week for travel was between March 8-14.
With this in mind – coupled with the fact that the start of April is also set to be extremely busy – travelers should try and visit towards the end of April and in May to try and avoid the thronging crowds.
