Cancun is a destination that not only is inhabited by nearly one million people but also receives 10 times that in annual visitors too.
With so many people in the destination at any given time, security is important.
Now one of the busiest seasons is about to begin, so it’s no surprise that Cancun has launched a massive security operation ahead of spring break to enhance safety in the destination.
Take a look at exactly what they’re doing to make Cancun safer.

New Patrol Units
One of the most important steps Cancun has taken to improve security is introducing a variety of new patrol units for security forces.
In total, there were 127 vehicles acquired, including several ATVs, vans, motorcycles, side-by-sides, and two ambulances.
All of the new vehicles are monitored by the C2 and C5 command centers 24 hours a day through GPS monitoring.

Monitoring Public Transportation
Security operations are also taking place on public transportation that operates in the busy Hotel Zone and other popular tourist areas.
The “Safe Passenger” operation consists of public transportation surveillance that is conducted both onboard public transport vehicles and at various points throughout the city.
The operations are conducted by the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Traffic.

Hiring More Police Officers
Cancun is also launching a massive police hiring operation to add to the destination’s police force. Altogether they’re hoping to hire a total of 800 new police officers.
So far, 450 have made it through the interviewing process and are moving on to the next steps.
Those who make it through these first phases would attend the police academy for about five and a half months before actually being put on the force.

Cracking Down On Corruption
While delivering the new patrol vehicles, municipal president Ana Paty Peralta also announced that police corruption won’t be tolerated.
She commented, “These patrols are to serve the people, not to take advantage of the uniform and the badge.”
She also urged the reporting of any abuses of authority by the police officers.

Other Security Measures That Have Recently Been Implemented In Cancun
Cancun authorities are no strangers to implementing necessary security operations, it’s very common in fact.
Some of the other measures that have been taken include the installation of 800 security cameras in various neighborhoods and more than 130 monitoring points around the city.
Additionally, officials are in the process of securing vest cameras for the police force in order to enhance transparency.

Currently, there are no restrictions on traveling to Cancun from the U.S. State Department, but travelers are advised to exercise caution and follow certain precautions when visiting.
