Cancun Named The #1 International Destination For Americans This Thanksgiving

Share The Article

When Americans decide to trade a traditional roasted turkey for fresh al pastor tacos and a beachfront margarita, they are overwhelmingly choosing one specific stretch of the Mexican Caribbean. According to the latest holiday travel data, Cancun has officially been crowned the number one international destination for U.S. travelers this Thanksgiving.

The annual Top Thanksgiving Destinations report, compiled by travel insurance provider Allianz Partners, analyzed hundreds of thousands of flight itineraries to see exactly where Americans are heading for the upcoming November holiday.

While New York City took the top spot for domestic travel, international flyers are aggressively chasing the sun, and Cancun completely dominated the international travel board.

If you are planning to ditch the freezing temperatures and family drama for a tropical escape this year, you are in excellent company. Here is why Cancun continues to crush the competition, what the rest of the top international list looks like, and how Americans are completely changing the way they travel for the holidays.

Why Cancun Remains the Undisputed Champion

Cancun does not just accidentally fall into the number one spot year after year. The destination has engineered a massive, highly efficient tourism machine that caters perfectly to the American traveler looking for a frictionless getaway.

The biggest factor driving Cancun’s dominance is pure logistical convenience. Cancun International Airport processes thousands of flights a week, meaning travelers can easily book a direct flight from almost any major or mid-sized airport in the United States. You can board a plane in a snowy midwestern city after breakfast and be floating in a warm Caribbean infinity pool by the early afternoon.

Beyond the logistics, the infrastructure in Quintana Roo is unmatched. Whether you want a high-energy party resort in the Hotel Zone, a quiet wellness retreat, or a family-friendly complex with massive water parks, the sheer volume of hotel inventory means there is a perfect property for every specific travel style and budget.

The Top Tropical Escapes

While Cancun secured the gold medal, the rest of the top three international destinations highlight a clear trend: Americans want warm weather, ocean views, and world-class hospitality.

Following closely behind Cancun, San José del Cabo took the number two spot, while Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic secured third place. All three of these destinations have mastered the art of the seamless vacation. They offer incredible beachfront properties, massive international airports with heavy U.S. connectivity, and a robust all-inclusive market that removes the financial anxiety of group travel.

The New Holiday Travel Trend: Extending the Trip

The Allianz Partners data also revealed a massive shift in how Americans are approaching their holiday time off. Travelers are no longer just flying out on Wednesday and rushing back on Sunday.

Nearly one-third of surveyed travelers are actively planning to add extra vacation days to their Thanksgiving trip. In fact, travelers who extend their holiday getaways are planning a median trip length of eight full days. By leveraging the built-in federal holiday, travelers are maximizing their paid time off to turn a quick weekend visit into a massive, week-long international vacation.

Would You Return To Cancun Here's How Many Travelers Do

The core motivation behind this travel surge remains deeply personal. Despite the shift toward tropical destinations, 67 percent of travelers reported that they are traveling primarily to visit or connect with family and friends. Friend groups and extended families are increasingly pooling their resources to book group trips to the Caribbean, prioritizing shared experiences and resort luxury over the stress of cooking a massive dinner at home.

Navigating the Holiday Rush

With record-breaking numbers expected at airports across the country this November, executing a flawless international trip requires some strategic planning. Travelers are highly confident this year, with nearly 70 percent reporting they booked their trips between one and six months in advance.

If you are heading to Cancun or Cabo this season, control the variables you can. Stick to booking direct flights to eliminate the risk of missing a tight connection in a crowded domestic hub. Skip the checked bags and pack a solid, reliable carry-on to completely bypass the chaotic baggage claim carousels. Once you land and settle into your resort, do not be afraid to walk a few blocks away from the main tourist strips to find incredible, authentic local dining at a fraction of the resort corridor prices.

Thanksgiving is evolving, and the Mexican Caribbean is ready for the rush. Pack your swimsuit, grab your passport, and enjoy the holiday in the sun.
