Cancun officials will tighten restrictions for travelers after 44 Argentine students tested positive upon returning home from the resort city. Director of the Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo, Darío Flota Ocampo has said there will be an increased focus on ensuring that visitors are following all health protocols while in Cancun.
“Stronger measures will be taken in the face of Easter to prevent it from being another source of contagion,” Flota Ocampo stated. The Director was specifically referring to health protocols not being followed on beaches and that city authorities will be watching for those that do not follow the rules.
“It is necessary for everyone on the beaches to assume their part,” he cautioned, reported the Riviera Maya News. “Local authorities had done this strictly at the beginning, but they need to resume that role otherwise, we are going to go back.”
Beaches will remain open in Cancun but restrictions are in place that all visitors must follow including:
- No Alcohol
- Visitors must maintain social distancing of 1.5 meters
- Maximum capacity of 60% enforced by officials
Cancun Officials Recommend Visitors Stay In Certified Areas
The Tourism Promotion Council is recommending that all visitors remain in areas that have been certified and only visit places where health protocols are being strictly followed. The council voiced that many businesses have invested heavily in keeping visitors safe and that tourists should choose to stay if those locations first. “Not all people who visit us remain within the certified facilities and maintain healthy distance, use face mask properly and frequently wash their hands,” Flota Ocampo stated.
The Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council is reminding all visitors to do their part and respect the health protocols while visiting Cancun. Local and state authorities will step up patrols to ensure that all visitors are wearing face masks and following proper social distancing in all public spaces. Cancun is currently operating under the yellow stop light warning which sets out the permitted activities in the region based on the number on Covid-19 cases.
The yellow stop light allows for the following:
- Hotel occupancy levels to 60%
- Restaurant occupancy to 60%
- Beach capacity will be increased to 60%
- Tourist attractions, tours and historical sites my operate at 60%
Casinos, public transportation and conventions halls are limited to 50% of normal capacity. Nightclubs, bars, discos and night entertainment venues must remain closed. Travelers continue to report to Travel Off Path that some night venues are open that also double as restaurants but expect that most nightclubs may be closed.
Shopping centers, malls, gyms and spas are all open but will be operating with limited occupancy.
In response to the 44 students who tested positive, Flota Ocampo stated “protocols have been strict, but there are visitors who leave the certified areas, the hotels and restaurants, and who have to be responsible for their own protection, to maintain health recommendations, wear face masks, wash their hands, avoid physical contact,” he said reported the Riviera Maya News.
