Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, or Tulum? I Traveled Solo to All 3 & Here’s the Truth

Let’s be real. Staring at a map of Mexico’s Riviera Maya, trying to pick your home base, can feel like a high-stakes exam. Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum—they all flash images of turquoise water and tacos, but trust me, they are not the same. Picking the wrong one for your vibe can be the difference between the solo trip of a lifetime and a week of feeling like you’re at the wrong party.

I know because I just did the legwork. I bounced between all three, armed with a backpack and a healthy dose of skepticism. So, before you book that flight, here’s the real, honest-to-goodness truth about where you should go.

Cancun: The Party Animal’s Paradise

Resort Hotels Pool in Cancun Hotel Zone

If your ideal vacation involves a wristband that gets you unlimited margaritas and a guaranteed spot by a massive, sparkling pool, then welcome to Cancun. The Hotel Zone is a spectacle—a polished, high-energy strip of land designed for maximum fun with minimum effort. It’s loud, it’s proud, and the nightlife is legendary.

Bars in Cancun Hotel Zone

As a solo traveler, it’s almost too easy. I stayed at Hotel RIU Cancun all-inclusive for a couple of nights and instantly fell in with a group by the swim-up bar. Later, we all headed to a mega-club that felt like a Vegas show on steroids. It’s a blast, but it’s a bubble. Authentic Mexico? You’ll have to hop on a bus to El Centro (downtown) for a taste of that.

Go here if: You want a classic, no-hassle, high-octane vacation. If your goal is to party, relax by a massive pool, and have everything taken care of, Cancun is your spot.

Playa Del Carmen: The Social Sweet Spot

5th Avenue Playa Del Carmen

Playa is the social butterfly’s dream. The second I stepped onto the cobblestones of Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue), the city’s miles-long pedestrian street, I got it. This place buzzes with energy. It’s a mashup of European city vibes and Caribbean beach town charm, and it’s incredibly walkable.

Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, or Tulum I Traveled Solo to All 3 & Here’s the Truth

This was, by far, the easiest place to connect with other travelers. I’d grab a coffee, hit a beach club, and by lunch, I’d have a new group to explore with. The hostels here, like the famous Che Playa, are basically social clubs with beds. Playa’s magic is that it’s the perfect home base—you can easily hop a ferry to Cozumel or an ADO bus to explore ancient ruins and cenotes. It’s the undisputed heart of the Riviera Maya.

Go here if: You want to be in the middle of everything, meet people from all over the world, and have a perfect, walkable base for endless adventures.

Tulum: The Bohemian Dream (with a Price Tag)

Low Season In Tulum Reaches New Bottom According To Local Tour Guides

Ah, Tulum. You’ve seen it on Instagram, and yes, it really is that beautiful. The cliffside ruins, the yoga shalas, the impossibly stylish people—it’s all real. But here’s the truth they don’t always show you: Tulum is two different worlds. There’s the beach zone, which is a stunningly aesthetic, eye-wateringly expensive paradise. Then there’s the town (Pueblo), which is more down-to-earth, affordable, and where you’ll find the real backpacker buzz.

Digital Nomad Female Tulum

Getting between the two requires a bike, a scooter, or a taxi driver who’s about to become your new best friend (and a significant line item on your budget). I loved my mornings doing yoga and my afternoons swimming in cenotes, but the vibe can feel a bit… performative. It’s less about meeting people spontaneously and more about joining the right wellness class or getting into the right jungle party.

Go here if: You’ve got the budget for it, you’re looking for a wellness-focused and aesthetically beautiful trip, and you’re happy to create your own adventure. And with the new Tulum airport, getting there is easier than ever.

The only wrong choice is not going at all.
