According to the Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office, this group used sophisticated call centers and convincing websites to offer deeply discounted holidays to popular spots like Cancun and the Riviera Maya.
Victims would pay for these dream getaways, only for the scammers to vanish with their money, leaving travelers stranded and out of pocket. The investigation, spurred by complaints in Quintana Roo, led to the arrest of ten individuals and the seizure of computer equipment, bank cards, and communication devices used in the fraud. This operation highlighted a coordinated effort between Quintana Roo and Mexico City law enforcement to tackle these far-reaching scams.
The crackdown has also extended to the property market. Another set of arrests targeted a group accused of engaging in fraudulent real estate management and sales in Cancun. These individuals allegedly used shell companies and false identities to deceive both Mexican and international buyers interested in acquiring or managing properties in the sought-after tourist destination. The Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office confirmed that seven arrest warrants were executed in Mexico City as part of this ongoing investigation. Authorities are working to identify more people involved in this network and locate additional victims who may have lost significant sums of money.
Beyond these organized fraud rings, Cancun has also been grappling with persistent problems concerning taxi services, particularly at the international airport. Numerous tourists have reported being charged outrageously high fares, sometimes amounting to hundreds of dollars for very short trips. There have also been increasing reports of aggressive behavior from some taxi drivers, especially towards tourists attempting to use ride-sharing apps like Uber.
These incidents have, in some cases, escalated to physical confrontations. In response, authorities, including the National Guard, have increased their presence and oversight. Recent reports indicate arrests of taxi drivers for extortion and assault, and the Quintana Roo government is actively discussing new regulations to control fares and ensure passenger safety, aiming to protect the region’s reputation as a welcoming destination.

- Confirm taxi fares: Before getting into a taxi, confirm the fare to your destination. Consider using authorized airport taxi services or reputable ride-sharing apps where available and permitted. Take a photo of the taxi number if you have any concerns.
- Protect your information: Be cautious when using ATMs; prefer machines located inside banks or hotels. Shield your PIN and be aware of your surroundings. Never share sensitive personal or financial information unless you are certain of the recipient’s legitimacy.
Cancun remains a premier global destination, and local authorities are working diligently to ensure it stays a safe and enjoyable place for all visitors.
